If you’re looking to expand your teaching capabilities, a master’s in literacy can give you additional marketable skills in the areas of reading, writing, and language. 

Monmouth University’s MSEd in Literacy prepares you for the New Jersey State Reading Specialist Certification. You’ll learn to work individually or in groups with students in kindergarten through 12th grade who need help with reading. 

Our innovative, immersive program aligns with standards set by the Council for Exceptional Children and includes real-world learning experiences in classroom settings. Throughout the program, you’ll engage with peers and make connections in the field.

Boosting a student’s confidence in their ability to read and understand material is incredibly rewarding. A master’s in literacy allows certified teachers to pursue opportunities such as:

Curriculum & Degree Requirements

Our hands-on program includes a mix of theoretical and practical application.

Required Courses (30 credits) 

The master’s in literacy curriculum includes courses such as: 

  • Advanced Literacy Instruction
  • Literacy Strategies for All Learners I and II
  • Multicultural Literature and Literacy 
  • Strategies for Teaching Writing, K-12
  • Literacy Trends and Issues
  • Assessment and Instruction in Literacy I and II
  • Practicum in Literacy
  • Administration and Supervision of Literacy Practices and Professional Development for School Leaders

Literacy Clinics

A cornerstone of our program is the Literacy Clinics. These clinical classes offer students opportunities to administer reading and writing assessment and develop instructional programs for local K-12 students. The Clinics also give our master’s students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience.

Here’s an overview of the admissions requirements and application process for our Master of Science in Education – Literacy program.  

Admissions Criteria & Application Requirements

To be considered for admission:

  • A four-year baccalaureate degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major
  • Teacher certification

Your application must also include: 

  • Two letters of recommendation related to the applicants preparedness for graduate study
  • Essay (500 words or more) highlight students goals for the graduate literacy program

Literacy Clinics

Participate in literacy clinics designed to determine children’s strengths and areas of need in literacy, as well as to provide instruction in reading and writing strategies.

Fieldwork Experience

Gain real-world literacy education experience in local classroom settings.
