Program Overview

Designed for certified teachers, Monmouth University’s MEd program explores teaching methods, educational research, and innovative curriculum design. You can also customize your academic experience by adding courses that lead to an endorsement in English as a second language (ESL). 

With online classes, you can do this all while still teaching full-time. Throughout the program, you’ll engage with peers and make connections in the field. Earning an advanced degree in education can deepen your knowledge and expand your capacity to teach and support young learners. 

ESL Endorsement Options

English as a Second Language Endorsement

Expand your capability in the classroom and beyond. Learning how people acquire language and explore ways to build curriculum to best serve your students. 

Bilingual/Bicultural Endorsement

Boost your marketability and prepare to teach your content area in English and your students’ native language in New Jersey public schools. 

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate

This certification program is ideal for non-certified teachers who, including international students, who are interested in teaching ESL in nontraditional or overseas settings.

Our 30-credit program includes required master of education courses, electives of your choice, and specific classes related to your desired endorsement:

MEd Required Courses (15 credits) 

The master’s in education curriculum is highly personalizable. You can align your required coursework with your individual endorsement requirements. 

  • Social Justice in Education – select one course among the SJEDU options, such as:
    • Diversity in Education
  • Education Foundations – select one course among the EDFOU option
    • Child and Adolescent Development
    • Teaching Emergent Multilingual Learners in an Inclusive Classroom

English as a Second Language Endorsement (15 credits)

Students pursuing the ESL Endorsement will complete the following courses:

  • Methods of Teaching Content Area Literacy in the Inclusive Elementary Setting: Language Arts & Social Studies
    • or Advanced Literacy Instruction
    • or Bilingual Education: Theories and Practices
  • Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching
  • Teaching Emergent Multilingual Learners in an Inclusive Classroom
  • Theories and Practice of ESL Instruction Part I
  • Theories and Practice of ESL Instruction Part II

Bilingual/Bicultural Endorsement (12 credits)

Students pursuing the Bilingual/Bicultural Endorsement will complete the following courses:

  • Linguistics and the English Language
    • or Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching
  • Theories and Practice of ESL Instruction Part I
  • Theories and Practice of ESL Instruction Part II
  • Bilingual Education: Theories and Practices

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate (18 credits)

Students pursuing the TESOL certificate will complete the following courses:

  • Linguistics and the English Language
    • or Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching

  • Content Literacy & Assessment
  • Teaching Emergent Multilingual Learners in an Inclusive Classroom
  • Theories and Practice of ESL Instruction Part I
  • Theories and Practice of ESL Instruction Part II

Admissions Requirements

Here’s an overview of the admissions requirements and application process for our Master of Education – ESL Endorsement programs:  

Admissions Criteria & Application Requirements

To be considered for admission:

  • A four-year baccalaureate degree with a minimum overall 3.0 GPA
  • Teacher certification, based on program of study

Your application must also include: 

  • Two letters of recommendation related to the applicants preparedness for graduate study
  • Essay (500 words or more) highlight students goals for the graduate program
  • Resume
English as a Second Language Endorsement Admissions Requirements

To be considered for admission:

  • A four-year baccalaureate degree with a minimum overall 3.0 GPA
  • Hold a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS), provisional, or standard NJ instructional certificate. If the applicant is not a certified teacher, the applicant must hold an NJ Certificate of Eligibility (CE) ESL and be employed in an ESL position requiring certification.

Your application must also include:

  • Two letters of recommendation for graduate study.
  • Résumé
  • Personal statement of not more than two pages that describes the applicant’s preparation for study in the program and personal objectives for graduate study.

Students pursuing Provisional Teacher Prep Program (alternate route) must submit the following prior to applying to the MEd ESL program:

  • Applicants with a Certificate of Eligibility:
    • 50 hour VOPC-Verification of Completion form.
    • Completion of OPI and WPT in English
    • Employment Contract or Letter. Applicants must also be employed in an ESL role.
    • Cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or better.

Applicants with a Limited Certificate of Eligibility are required to complete all of the above and provide passing scores on CORE Praxis #5752.

Bilingual/Bicultural Endorsement Admissions Requirements

To be considered for admission:

  • A four-year baccalaureate degree with a minimum overall 3.0 GPA
    • A degree in a K-12 school curriculum content area other than foreign language or English as a Second Language.
  • Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing, or a standard NJ instructional certificate, or a Certificate of Eligibility with a teaching position in an ESL/Bilingual setting.
  • A passing score for nationally recognized test of oral and written proficiency in both English and the target language.

Your application must also include:

  • Two letters of recommendation for graduate study
  • Résumé
  • Personal statement of not more than two pages that describes the applicant’s preparation for study in the program and personal objectives for graduate study.

Students pursuing Provisional Teacher Prep Program (alternate route) must submit the following prior to applying to the MEd Bilingual/Bicultural program:

  • Applicants with a Certificate of Eligibility:
    • 50 Hour VOPC-Verification of Program Completion form.
    • Completion of OPI and WPT in English and the target language.
    • Employment Contract or Letter indicating employment as a Bilingual Teacher of Record, Bilingual Long Term Substitute, or Bilingual maternity leave replacement.
    • Cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or better.
  • Applicants with a Limited Certificate of Eligibility are required to complete all of the above to and must submit passing scores on CORE Praxis #5752 and have a CPGA of 2.75 or better.
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate Admissions Requirements

To be considered for admission:

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory overall GPA per state requirements (see Website for details) and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.

Your application must also include:

  • Two letters of recommendation for graduate study.
  • Résumé
  • Personal statement of not more than two pages that describes the applicant’s preparation for study in the program and personal objectives for graduate study.
