Program Overview

Monmouth University’s master’s in educational counseling programs prepare you to become a caring, compassionate advocate for students at all levels. Through a mix of theory and practice, you’ll gain skills and knowledge to help you help your students thrive. Courses are delivered in a hybrid format, with students attending weekly evening in-person sessions and completing a portion of their coursework online.

Our program is committed to increasing awareness of the diverse student populations that all counselors and student affairs professionals serve. Throughout the curriculum, you’ll find courses and learning experiences that address social justice and explore issues like class, race, culture, and privilege. 

You’ll graduate with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to guide and advocate for students in today’s global and ever-changing society. 

Educational Counseling Master’s Options

Monmouth University offers two counseling-related MSEd options:

  • School Counseling prepares you to work as a school counselor in public and private school settings at the K-12 levels. This program prepares students for certification as a National Certified School Counselor and meets the academic requirements for a Licensed Professional Counselor. 
  • Student Affairs and College Counseling prepares you to work with contemporary college students as a counselor, administrator, or educator. This program prepares students for certification and meets the academic requirements for a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Applications accepted for Fall-start only.

School Counseling Endorsement Options

Students may also pursue post-master’s endorsements to enhance their credentials:

Career & Professional Outcomes

After completing the master’s in school counseling program, students can work as professional counselors and student advocates in public and private school settings. The MSEd in School Counseling can also prepare students for certification as a National Certified School Counselor or Licensed Professional Counselor.

Degree Requirements

Our hands-on, hybrid educational counseling programs include a mix of theory and practical application. Here’s what you’ll learn. 

Required Courses for Master’s Programs (60 credits) 

The educational counseling curriculum includes a range of coursework covering skills and techniques, equity and access, theory and research, and practical application. Courses include: 

  • Introduction to Professional Counseling
  • Human Growth and Development
  • Counseling Skills
  • Advanced Topics in Race and Racism
  • Diversity and Social Justice
  • Group Counseling
  • School Counseling Program Planning and Consultation
  • Career Development and Counseling

All educational counseling graduate students will also complete a capstone project and 700 hours of clinical experience through a practicum and two internships.

Admission Requirements and Application Process

Here’s an overview of the admissions process for our master’s in school counseling program:

Educational Counseling Master’s Programs Application Requirements

To be considered for admission:

  • A four-year baccalaureate degree with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 

Your application must also include: 

  • Two letters of recommendation related to the applicants preparedness for graduate study
  • Essay (500 words or more) highlighting student’s goals for the graduate school counseling program; the essay should specifically address why social justice is important to the applicant and how they foresee using it in practice
  • Participation in a group interview is required.
Post-Master’s Endorsement: Director of School Counseling Services Application Requirements

To be considered for admission:

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory overall GPA per state requirements (see New Jersey Department of Education for details) and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.
  • Possession of a master’s degree.

Your application must also include: 

  • Two letters of recommendation related to the applicant’s competence for this graduate program and professional work.
  • Essay (500 words or more) explaining why the applicant wishes to pursue this graduate program.
  • Note: Must hold an NJ school counselor or student personnel services certificate or an equivalent out-of-state certificate. Upon completion, provide documentation evidencing completion of three years of successful experience as a school counselor in grades P–12 to be eligible for the endorsement.
Student Assistance Coordinator (SAC) Requirements Application Requirements

To be considered for admission:

  • Hold a standard instructional certificate, or a school psychologist, school social worker, school counselor, director of school counseling services or school nurse endorsement, or a valid Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor credential issued by the NJ Alcohol and Drug counselor Committee of the Marriage and Family Board, or a valid Certified Prevention Specialist credential issued by the Addiction Professionals Certification Board of NJ or hold a master’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Note: Monmouth University students who are pursuing one of the above credentials can apply to this program and pursue it concurrently with their degree.

Your application must also include:

  • Applicant must submit an essay of 500 words or more explaining why applicant wishes to pursue a SAC endorsement.
  • Submit all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts.

Monmouth University’s graduate program in school counseling is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). 

Convenient Format

Gain real-world school counseling or student affairs experience through supervised practicums and internships. 

Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) Option

Upon completing your MSEd in Educational Counseling, you will meet the New Jersey educational requirement to pursue your LPC.
