We offer an online asynchronous master of science in education with concentrations that lead to principal, supervisor, or administrator certification, as well as a research-rich flexible hybrid doctoral program with specializations in P-12 and higher education.
Whichever program you choose, you’ll have the flexibility to continue your education while still working full-time—and you’ll be supported and mentored by an expert faculty along the way. Monmouth’s School of Education has close connections with schools and districts throughout New Jersey and beyond, giving our students access to high-quality, immersive learning experiences. Through the Educational Leadership Academy, you’ll participate in events attended by the NJDOE, Superintendents of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, The New Jersey Association of School Administrators, and the Monmouth and Ocean County Curriculum Consortium, and more.
Educational Leadership Degrees, Concentrations & Certifications
Master of Science in Education (MSEd) – Principal/Supervisor Program
After successful completion of this online 32-credit program, students earn their MSEd, Supervisor’s Certificate, and Principal’s Certificate of Eligibility.
Master of Science In Education (MSEd) Principal/Supervisor/School Administrator Program
This online 35-credit program is designed for teachers and other educational professionals seeking to become principals and central office administrators.
Doctor of Education (EdD) in Educational Leadership
Students in this 54-credit, cohort-based program can choose one of two concentration areas: P-12 Educational Leadership or Higher Education Leadership.
Supervisor’s Certification Courses
Students who already have a master’s degree may take only the four MSEd courses needed for supervisors certification.

Master of Science in Education – Principal/Supervisor Requirements
The principal/supervisor/administrator MSEd program requires courses such as:
- Introduction to Educational Leadership and Supervision for Student Learning (P-12)
- Curriculum Development and Design
- Public School Supervision and Communication
- Human Resource Management and School Finance
- Community Relations
- Internship for School Leadership
Specific requirements or electives vary slightly depending on which concentration/certification areas you choose. Refer to the catalog for full details:
Supervisor Certification Requirements
The Supervisor’s Certification courses are embedded within the Principal/Supervisor program.
- Students who complete that program graduate with both a Supervisor’s Certificate and a Principal’s Certificate of Eligibility.
- If you already have a master’s degree, you may take the four courses necessary for that certification without being enrolled in the Principal’s program.

- EDL-582: Practicum in Supervision and Curriculum, P-12
- EDL-593: Administration and Supervision of Literacy Practices and Professional Development for School Leaders
Doctor of Education Requirements
The expansive curriculum covers four main areas: leadership and learning; transformative leadership; policy and procedures; and research and assessment. The program culminates with a transformative leadership project.

Doctor of Education Concentration Requirements
Students in the EdD program can choose one of two concentrations; refer to the catalog links for specific requirements.
P-12 Educational Leadership – sample P-12-focused courses include:

Admissions Requirements
Here’s an overview of the admissions requirements and application process for our master’s and doctor of education programs.
MSEd with Principal/Supervisor/Administrator Concentrations Requirements
To be considered for admission:
- A four-year baccalaureate degree with a preferred minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major
- Teacher certification, if applicable
Your application must also include:
- Two letters of recommendation related to the applicants preparedness for graduate study
- Essay (500 words or more) highlighting students goals for the graduate program
Doctor of Education Requirements for Admission
To be considered for admission:
- A master’s degree in education, business, or related field
- Preferred minimum GPA of 3.25 out of 4.0 from a nationally accredited master’s program
Your application must also include:
- Resume/curriculum vitae
- Two letters of recommendation related to the applicants preparedness for doctoral study
- Personal statement (about two pages) highlighting students goals for the program
- Writing sample
EdD candidates may also be selected for an interview by one or more members of the educational leadership advisory committee to determine the candidate’s level of interest, aptitude, and career goals.
Supervisor Certification Requirements for Admission
To be considered for admission:
- Possession of a Master’s degree.
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory overall GPA per state requirements (see New Jersey Department of Education for details) and a 3.0 in the undergraduate major.
- Teacher certification.
Your application must also include:
- Two letters of recommendation related to the applicant’s competence for this graduate program and professional work.
- Essay (500 words or more).
Notes:
- Upon completion of the Principal/School Administrator/Supervisor Program, you must provide documentation evidencing completion of five years of successful educational experience under a valid provisional or standard New Jersey or equivalent out-of-state certificate to be eligible for the endorsement.
- The state code requires that an applicant for the Supervisor certification must hold a standard New Jersey instructional or educational services certificate or its out-of-state equivalent, and complete three years of successful, full-time teaching and/or educational services experience.
- Teaching and/or educational services experience completed in a New Jersey public school must have been under an appropriate New Jersey certificate.
