Student Awards Ceremony - Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Awards Ceremony?
For over 20 years SGA has sponsored this annual tradition as a way to recognize the academic and extracurricular achievements of our student body. PLEASE NOTE: Two (2) seperate award ceremonies will be held for the 2012/2013 academic year.
- The Student Leadership Award Ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 28, at 3:00 p.m. in Pollak Theatre.
- The Student Academic Award Cermony will be held on Friday, May 3 at 5:00 p.m. in Pollak Theatre.
How should I dress for the ceremony?
Business casual is preferred. Sneakers, jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, or casual wear aren't appropriate for the event.
How long is the ceremony?
The ceremony typically lasts approximately 60-90 minutes. Ceremony decorum would recommend that award recipients, presenters, and guests stay for the entire program. When people leave early, it disrupts the program and it's inconsiderate to the remaining presenters and award recipients.
What is the difference between an "announcer" and a "presenter" at the Student Awards Ceremony?
The announcer is typically the Dean of each respective school. The announcer is on the stage. He or she will read the awards and the names of the students who are being recognized. The presenter is usually the faculty member/advisor who submitted the award information to SGA. He or she will be in the audience at the ceremony. When the award is announced he/she will go to the front of the stage to hand the award to the student(s).
I submitted an award to be presented to a student. What will I have to do at the ceremony?
As a presenter you will first need to purchase some form of recognition (plaque or certificate) for the student(s) you are recognizing. Should you need help in finding a trophy company near Monmouth University, please feel free to contact SGA by calling 732-571-3484. You will not go on stage to make a speech. When the announcer for your school (typically the Dean) reads the award that you/your representative submitted, you will meet your student(s) in front of the stage in Pollak Theatre and give the award to him or her. We ask that presenters arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the ceremony.
I am serving as the announcer for my school. What will I do at the ceremony?
You will be on stage and read the awards for your school that have been submitted to SGA by the faculty/departments in your school. A few days leading up to the ceremony, SGA will provide the announcers with a draft copy of the awards that have been submitted to us up to that point in time. It will include the names of the presenters (faculty/advisors) for each award and the students who have indicated to SGA that they plan to attend the ceremony. On the day of the ceremony, SGA will provide you with a final copy of the awards for your school when you arrive at Pollak Theatre. We ask that announcers arrive at least 15 minutes before the ceremony begins.
As a presenter, do I need to contact the student that I am presenting an award to?
Yes. When you notify your student, please let him or her know that SGA will be sending an e-mail invitation which they should review. SGA will want to know if the student is planning to attend the ceremony and whether not they intend to bring guests. The invitation will include a deadline for them to RSVP.
What should I do if I have asked someone else to present my
award(s) in my absence?
If someone else will serve as a proxy and present your awards it is vital that he/she has the awards/certificates ahead of time and knows to show up at Pollak Theatre at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the program. SGA would encourage you to share this information sheet with the person as well.
