After securing a teaching position, Alternate Route candidates are required to enroll in a state-approved Certificate of Educator Preparation Program. Monmouth University offers flexible, high-quality pathways designed to help provisional teachers develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for long-term success in the classroom. Whether you hold a K–12, Elementary K–6, or Preschool through Grade 3 Certificate of Eligibility, our programs provide the coursework, support, and mentorship necessary to meet New Jersey certification requirements and earn standard licensure.
Once hired, an Alternate Route candidate must enroll in an approved Certificate of Educator Preparation Program. At Monmouth University, options include:
- A 30 credit Master’s in Education (M.Ed.) Early Childhood Education (P3) Program
- A 2-year/350-hour Alternate Route Teacher Training Program (Most Content Areas)
- A 2-year/450-hour Alternate Route Teacher Training Program (Elementary K-6)
For K-12 CE Holders
After securing employment as a teacher, a K-12 CE holder must enroll themselves in a 350-hour CE Educator Preparation program.
The Alternate Route Teacher Training Program organizes the state-mandated 350 hours of formal instruction into four distinct phases.
- Phase I (Fall): 100 Hours
- Phase II (Spring): 100 Hours
- Phase III (Fall): 75 Hours
- Phase IV (Spring): 75 Hours
Elementary K-6 CE holders
After securing employment as a teacher, an Elementary K-6 CE holder must enroll themselves in a 450-hour CE Educator Preparation program.
The Alternate Route Teacher Training Program organizes the state-mandated 450 hours of formal instruction into four distinct phases.
- Phase I (Fall): 125 Hours
- Phase II (Spring): 125 Hours
- Phase III (Fall): 100 Hours
- Phase IV (Spring): 100 Hours
Pre-3 CE Holders (ONLY)
Applicants who hold a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) in Preschool through Grade 3 (P–3) are required to complete a state-approved Preschool through Grade 3 educator preparation program consisting of a minimum of 30 graduate credits in order to obtain standard certification.
