Student Opportunities – Jordan Strobing

Jordan StrobingMy name is Jordan Strobing and I am a rising senior studying Computer Science at Monmouth University. Throughout my time at Monmouth, I’ve been fortunate to have many opportunities to learn new skills and build upon my knowledge of existing ones. I currently hold three positions on campus relating to Computer Science. I work with Dr. Wang as a researcher, with Dr. Zheng as President of the Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society, and as a computer science tutor in the tutoring lab. These opportunities have led to me accepting an offer with Fidelity Investments, where I will be spending the summer as a Software Engineering Intern.

I’ve been doing research with Dr. Wang since September 2021. Under his tutelage, I’ve learned countless skills that will benefit me in the future. During the Fall semester, I studied the theory of Petri nets and how they relate to the medical field. I compiled many papers that utilized Petri nets in the medical field for an upcoming survey paper. During the Spring semester, we were able to start conducting original research on evacuation scenarios using Petri nets. We made great progress on our research and will be continuing to work on it during my final year at Monmouth. Our project focuses on dynamically changing evacuation routes while an evacuation situation is live. We have created models, ran simulations on the models, contributed to an open source project, wrote a research paper, created software for data analysis, and many other tasks in order to make significant progress on our research. I am very excited to continue working on this project and see what we can accomplish in the future.

I’ve been President of the Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honor Society since November 2021. My goal as President, along with Dr. Zheng and the Vice President, is to organize events within the Computer Science and Software Engineering department at Monmouth aimed to help students. We recently held a resume workshop where students made appointments to work on their resumes with a staff member. We received great feedback from the students regarding this event and are happy that the students were able to get their resumes ready to apply for jobs. During my final year at Monmouth, we will continue to plan multiple events to help fellow CSSE students succeed.

I’ve been tutoring fellow Computer Science and Software Engineering students since September 2021. Throughout the school year I’ve worked with students from many different courses ranging from programming to theory. Being a tutor has helped me with being able to articulate my logic to the students while also reinforcing the knowledge I’ve gained from my past classes. I genuinely enjoy working with the students and teaching them programming skills. I hope to continue this job in the Fall.

All of these roles, along with my time in the classroom, have helped me with landing my internship. I am very grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given while being at Monmouth. I am doing things now that I didn’t know were possible when I started studying computer science. I am very excited to be working at Fidelity Investments in the summer and finish my bachelor’s degree at Monmouth in the Fall!
