GET ORGANIZED! Before you begin your search for an apartment or try to find a roommate, take some time to figure out what you want, what you can afford, how many people you intend to live with, etc. Knowing what you want will save you time and make your search for an apartment or roommate less frustrating.

- Local newspapers
- Apartment complexes (typically 12 month leases)
- Get recommendations about realtors and landlords from friends who live off-campus.
- Pick a neighborhood and drive through the area seeking For Rent signs.
What to consider when selecting a rental
and/or roommate:
- Does the rental have a current Certificate of Occupancy (C/O)?
- Who will take care of any repairs in the rental? (Get this in writing.)
- What is the maximum occupancy for the unit?
- Is everyone committed to renting an apartment?
- Does the rental have a good or bad history with the town, the neighbors, Monmouth University or all of the above?
- Do you feel comfortable renting from the person (landlord or realtor)? If you don't then don't rent the unit.
- Are you permitted to take a look at the lease before you have to decide whether or not you want the rental?
- When and how is the rent due?
- How much notice will the landlord/realtor give you when they want to enter or show the rental?
- Will you be responsible for any utilities? If so, how much are they each month?
- Are there any special conditions or rules not listed in the lease? (Everything pertaining to your living there should be in the lease.)
