Getting Started with Peer Tutoring

Peer tutoring is free for Monmouth University students and available in subject areas related to university coursework. Students are matched with peers who have excelled in the subject they need help with.

How Do I Get Connected with a Tutor?

Need help with a specific course or want to strengthen your study skills? Tutoring Services is here to help! There are two ways to request a tutor:

  1. Schedule through Navigate360: Visit Navigate360 or download the “Navigate Student” app on your phone.
  2. Email Tutoring Services: Contact tutoringservices@monmouth.edu. Include your course code and preferred meeting times. You can expect a response within 48–72 hours.

Need an academic coach instead? Schedule an appointment through Navigate360.

How Long Will It Take to Get Matched with a Tutor?

When scheduling through Navigate360, you can select an available appointment time.

For tutoring requests via email, a tutor can usually be identified within 48–72 hours.

Your first session can take place as soon as you and your tutor find a mutually available time. However, same-day tutoring is not guaranteed. We encourage you to request help as soon as you notice you are struggling in a course.

How Often Can I Meet with a Tutor?

Weekly tutoring is recommended to help reinforce course material and improve retention. Some students benefit from just one or a few sessions, while others meet with a tutor as needed.

Please provide your tutor with as much advance notice as possible so you can find a time that works for both of you.

What Should I Expect from a Tutoring Session?

Students may receive up to two hours of tutoring per week. This time may be divided into four 30-minute sessions or two one-hour sessions, depending on scheduling availability.

Sessions typically last 30 minutes to one hour. Before your first meeting, let your tutor know what you need help with. Be sure to communicate your goals at the beginning of each session, too.

Tutoring sessions may include:

  • Reviewing and clarifying course material
  • Working through examples and practicing problems
  • Discussing assignments and answering questions
  • Developing effective study strategies
  • Strengthening understanding and independent learning skills

Come prepared with your questions, class materials, notes, and assignments so you can make the most of your time.

What Should I Not Expect from a Tutoring Session?

Tutoring is designed to help you become a more confident and independent learner. Tutors will guide you through the learning process, but they will not complete your work for you.

Please keep in mind:

  • Tutors will not do your assignments or coursework for you.
  • Tutoring is not intended for last-minute cramming the day before an exam.
  • Tutors cannot guarantee a particular grade.
  • Tutoring supports your learning but does not replace your own preparation, participation, and effort.

Our goal is to help you build the skills and confidence you need to succeed!
