Frequently Asked Questions

Is tutoring free?

Yes! Peer tutoring is free for all Monmouth University students.

What should I expect from a peer tutoring session?

Tutoring sessions are designed to help you become a more confident and independent learner. Tutors will help you understand course material rather than do the work for you.

Sessions are typically one-on-one. Depending on your needs, sessions may include:

  • Reviewing and clarifying course content
  • Demonstrations, modeling, and guided practice
  • Reviewing assignments and answering questions
  • Developing effective study strategies and learning techniques
  • Building confidence and independent learning skills

What should I not expect from a peer tutoring session?

Peer tutors are here to guide and support your learning, not complete your work for you. Tutoring is most effective when you come prepared and actively participate.

You should not expect a tutor to:

  • Complete assignments or coursework on your behalf
  • Cram with you the night before an exam
  • Guarantee a particular grade or academic outcome

Tutoring is most successful when combined with your own preparation, practice, and consistent effort.

How do I request a peer tutor?

You can request tutoring in two ways:

  1. Use the Navigate360 App to schedule an appointment with a peer tutor.
  2. Email Tutoring Services at tutoringservices@monmouth.edu. Include the course number and your preferred meeting times.

Who are the peer tutors?

Peer tutors are currently enrolled Monmouth University undergraduate students who meet the following qualifications:

  • A minimum overall GPA of 3.5
  • A grade of B or better in each course they tutor
  • Strong knowledge of their subject areas
  • A commitment to encouraging independent learning, critical thinking, and academic confidence

Tutors are not expected to know the answer to every question. When additional help is needed, they will work to locate the answer or direct students to an appropriate resource.

How often can I meet with a peer tutor?

Weekly tutoring is recommended to help reinforce course material and support long-term retention. However, you may meet with a tutor for one session, a few sessions, or as needed throughout the semester.

We encourage you to schedule appointments in advance so you and your tutor have enough time to find a mutually convenient meeting time.

How long will it take to get a peer tutor?

When scheduling through Navigate360, you can select an available appointment time and location.

For requests submitted by email, a tutor can usually be assigned within 48 to 72 hours of receiving your request. However, this timeframe may be longer during busy periods, such as midterms and finals, or when tutor availability is limited.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Request tutoring as soon as you notice you are having difficulty with a course.
  • Do not assume same-day assistance will be available.
  • Once you receive your tutor’s information by email, contact your tutor promptly to arrange your first session.
  • For high-demand subjects, including science, business, and mathematics, early communication is especially important.
  • If scheduling conflicts arise, email tutoringservices@monmouth.edu to request another tutor match.

Your first session can take place as soon as you and your tutor find a mutually convenient time.

Can I get tutoring for more than one course?

Yes! Tutoring is available for more than one course. An appointment needs to be made for each individual course.

Where and when can I meet with my tutor?

Tutoring sessions take place in the Center for Student Success on the lower level of the Student Center. Appointments with peer tutors are available Monday through Friday.

What if I need help improving my study skills?

Tutoring Services also offers appointments with academic coaches who can help you develop stronger study habits and improve your approach to learning.

Academic coaches are faculty members with strong teaching backgrounds who provide support with:

  • Study strategies and time management
  • Learning styles and effective study techniques
  • Understanding course content
  • Building independent learning skills

Academic coaches hold office hours Monday through Thursday in the CSS, and appointments are required. Students are expected to attend sessions weekly.

You can schedule an academic coaching appointment through the Navigate360 App or by emailing tutoringservices@monmouth.edu.

Is peer tutoring available for graduate students?

Because most peer tutors are undergraduate students who may not have completed graduate-level coursework, graduate students are encouraged to speak with their professors first. Professors may be able to address academic concerns or recommend a former student or classmate who can provide additional support.

Graduate students may also contact Tutoring Services to inquire about meeting with an academic coach for assistance with study strategies and learning skills.
