February 15-19, 2021
Each night from 7-8:30 p.m. on Zoom
There are many issues, such as poverty, hunger, social injustice, educational inequities, and environmental degradation, which threaten the sustainability of local and global communities. Current generations are feeling the impact of these issues more than ever before. As these threats affect our global community, it is important to adopt a mindset that we are all responsible for creating positive change. We need to gain a deeper understanding of these issues and collaborate with others in order to develop appropriate responsive actions. As educators, we need to promote positive change by making our own work more sustainable and by preparing our students to face the challenges set before them.
Welcome Message from New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy
Transcript
Hi, everyone. This is First Lady Tammy Snyder Murphy. It is my honor to welcome you to Monmouth University’s Sustainability Education Week. This past June, I was thrilled to announce that New Jersey would become the first state in the nation to incorporate climate change across all K-12 education standards. This is not only because we recognize that climate change is the most important existential threat currently facing the world, but also because we believe in the power of education. As you take part in this conference, my hope is that every one of you understands the role you can play in combatting our climate crisis. We are so proud that New Jersey has the best education system in the nation, and are confident that our students, who are already passionately motivated on this issue, will become the leaders of the green economy and the climate movement. I want to thank Monmouth University for hosting this important event, and I look forward to all that you will accomplish in the coming week as you participate in this conference. Thank you, and have a wonderful experience.
