Student Outcomes

The Monmouth Future Scholars (MFS) program will begin in 6th grade and will last through their freshman year of their undergraduate education at Monmouth University. Most activities will traditionally be facilitated during the academic year between September and May.

Monmouth Future Scholars #2

6th – Introducing College

  • Students will learn the broad definition of college by touring the Monmouth University campus and attending an athletics game.
  • Students will be introduced to their mentor, who will be an intern from the Educational Counseling graduate program at Monmouth University. The mentor will meet regularly with the student to individually address their psychosocial development. They will be supervised by a school counselor, as well as a faculty member from the Educational Counseling program.
  • Students may be asked to join a mentoring group in which an intern will facilitate leadership and reflection activities for students in the MFS program.

7th – Personal Development

  • Student will improve their high school readiness both academically and socially by involvement in leadership and trust-building activities and a study skills workshops.
  • Students will return to campus twice, once each semester. They will meet with graduate and college students as well as attend a cultural event. There will be a speaker for the student as well.
  • Students will introduced to their mentor who will be an intern from the Educational Counseling graduate program at Monmouth University. The mentor will meet regularly with the student to address to individually address their psychosocial development. They will be supervised by a school counseling intern as well as a faculty member from the Educational Counseling program.
  • Students may be asked to join a mentoring group in which an intern will facilitate leadership and reflection activities for students in the MFS program.

8th – High School Readiness

  • Student will improve their high school readiness both academically and socially by involvement in leadership and trust-building activities and a study skills workshops to help them transition to high school.
  • Students will introduced to their mentor, who will be an intern from the Educational Counseling graduate program at Monmouth University. The mentor will meet regularly with the student to address to individually address their psychosocial development. They will be supervised by a school counselor, as well as a faculty member from the Educational Counseling program.
  • Students may be asked to join a mentoring group in which an intern will facilitate leadership and reflection activities for students in the MFS program.
  • Students will return to campus twice during the academic year, once each semester. Students will engage in two leadership and group experiences.

9th – Preparing Personally for College

  • Students will be introduced to their mentor, who will be an intern from the Educational Counseling graduate program at Monmouth University. The mentor will meet regularly with the student to address to individually address their psychosocial development. They will be supervised by a school counselor, as well as a faculty member from the Educational Counseling program.
  • Students may be asked to join a mentoring group in which an intern will facilitate leadership and reflection activities for students in the MFS program.
  • Students will return to campus twice during the academic year, once each semester. Students will engage in two leadership and group experiences.
  • Students will focus on their identity, self-efficacy throughout this year, and engagement in extracurricular activities in the high school environment.

10th – Preparing Academically for College

  • Students will be introduced to their mentor, who will be an intern from the Educational Counseling graduate program at Monmouth University. The mentor will meet regularly with the student to address to individually address their psychosocial development. They will be supervised by a school counselor, as well as a faculty member from the Educational Counseling program.
  • Students will be asked to join a growth group in which an intern will lead activities and weekly reflection activities for students in the MFS program.
  • Students will return to campus twice during the academic year, once each semester. Students will engage in career development and leadership related activities.
  • Students will be encouraged to shadow a successful community member in a career area of their choice.
  • Students will take the Pre-SAT or Pre-ACT test.
  • Students will focus on career readiness and career exploration.

11th – Learning the College Admissions Process

  • Students will be introduced to their mentor, who will be an intern from the Educational Counseling graduate program at Monmouth University. The mentor will meet regularly with the student to address to individually address their psychosocial development. They will be supervised by a school counselor, as well as a faculty member from the Educational Counseling program.
  • Students may be asked to join a mentoring group in which an intern will facilitate leadership and reflection activities for students in the MFS program.
  • Students will prepare academically for college through SAT prep courses and a college success speaker.
  • Student will visit Monmouth University twice. Student will learn various aspects of the college admissions process by attending a majors fair and EOF/financial aid/admissions workshop.
  • Students will attend a precollege bridge program during the summer between their junior and senior year to simulate a college experience and schedule at Monmouth University. Students will reside in the residence halls at Monmouth University and engage in social, leadership, career, and academic development experiences.

12th – Preparing for the College Experience

  • Students will introduced to their mentor, who will be an intern from the Educational Counseling graduate program at Monmouth University. The mentor will meet regularly with the student to address to individually address their psychosocial development. They will be supervised by a school counselor, as well as a faculty member from the Educational Counseling program.
  • Students may be asked to join a mentoring group in which an intern will facilitate leadership and reflection activities for students in the MFS program.
  • Students will return to campus twice during the academic year, once each semester. Students will engage in two leadership and group experiences.
  • Students will be better prepared for the college experience by attending homecoming, a career fair, and potentially an EOF summer program.
  • Students will receive extra support directly from program faculty in completing FAFSA, seeking external scholarship funding, and the application process. Particular focus will focus on qualifying for the Educational Opportunity Fund program or other scholarship opportunities at Monmouth University.
  • The focus will be the transition into college and the admissions process.

1st Year of College – Navigating the College Experience

  • Students will be asked to join a growth group in which an intern will lead activities and weekly reflection activities for students in the MFS program.
  • Students will be assigned a specific mentor from the Educational Counseling program, who is a Student Affairs/College Counseling student. The student will mentor and support the student throughout the duration of the duration of their experience during the initial year as an undergraduate student.
  • The focus will be the college transition process and establishing integration within the college environment.
