International Students

For admission and financial aid purposes, students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States and who do not have refugee visas are considered international students. As part of the admission process and in order to obtain a visa, international students must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources – either personal funds or awards from the University – to support the cost of study in the U.S.  The following are the estimated costs for one year of study and should be used as the basis for gathering financial documentation:

International students are not eligible to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and are, as a result, ineligible for all federal and state grant, loan, and employment programs. International students are considered for Monmouth University grants and scholarships using the same criteria as for domestic students.  Learn more about University grants and scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students.

International students are also encouraged to take advantage of external sources:

  • Private Grants and Scholarships – Many organizations offer support for international students.  You should contact any civic, fraternal, religious, or service organizations with which you are already affiliated to see if they offer any assistance.  You might also try scholarship search engines like International Education Financial Aid to find funding opportunities.
  • Government Support – Some countries provide support for their citizens who are studying in the US.  Contact your country’s ministry of education, embassy, or consulate about funding opportunities.
  • Private Loans – Some banking institutions in your home country may offer financing for study in the US.  There are US-based lenders who offer loans to international students, but most require a US citizen as a co-signer for the loan.
