Students who plan to teach may wish to consider the TEACH Grant as a funding source. The TEACH Grant is a federal program that provides up to $4,000 per year ($8,000 maximum) for graduate study to students who are preparing to become teachers or enhance their qualifications as a teacher and who plan to teach in a high-need field (e.g., math, science, foreign language, reading, bilingual education, English language acquisition, special education, or any other field that is identified as a national shortage area). In exchange for the grant funds, the student agrees to complete a service obligation of teaching four years at a school that serves low income students in a high-need field.
Students who are considering accepting a TEACH Grant should do so carefully and should be aware that there may be serious financial consequences to this decision. If a TEACH Grant is disbursed to a student, but the student later does not fulfill the teaching service requirements, the amount of money awarded as a TEACH Grant becomes a loan to be repaid with interest (at the same rate as the federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan), and the interest is compounded from the time the grant was initially disbursed. Once the grant has been converted to a loan, it can revert back to a grant only under extremely limited circumstances. Once TEACH Grant recipients have left the University, they must file an annual certification of their status.
To be eligible for a TEACH Grant at Monmouth University you must:
- Meet the basic eligibility criteria for the federal student aid programs.
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form.
- Be enrolled in a TEACH Grant-eligible program.
- Have an undergraduate cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 for graduate coursework
- Receive TEACH Grant counseling that explains the terms and conditions of the TEACH Grant service obligation. You must complete counseling each year that you receive a TEACH Grant.
- Sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve or Repay each year that you receive the grant.
The maximum award for the 2022-23 academic year is $3,772 for full-time (9 or more credits per semester) students; awards to part-time students are prorated based on the number of registered credits.
