  • Marvin Heiferman, “Why We Look”

    Great Hall Auditorium

    As part of the ArtNOW Visiting Artist Series, Marvin Heiferman will speak about grief, photography and image sharing. After the March 2020 COVID-related death of his husband – the noted cultural critic and curator Maurice Berger – and when grief struck and as words failed him, Heiferman suspected photography wouldn’t.  Since then, daily postings of images and their accompanying captions on his Instagram account have functioned as intimate, frontline reports on the experience and processing of grief.  Widely viewed and written about, his online project has engaged thousands in a communal dialog and is now the subject of an upcoming documentary film short.

    Saint-Saëns’s operatic take on the classic biblical story follows Samson, the hero of legendary strength, and Dalila, the seductive Philistine whose beauty overpowers him. The Met’s larger-than-life production returns, featuring a massive orchestra and chorus and some of opera’s most spellbinding tunes. Mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Carmen) and tenor Clay Hilley star as the title pair.

    Exhibition on Screen – Cézanne: Portraits of a Life

    Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least known of all the impressionists – until now.

In conversation with Tim Marlow (Artistic Director at the Royal Academy of Arts), Hockney reveals anecdotes from across his artistic and personal life – from his first trip abroad to Egypt in 1963, to the effects of the death of his close friend Jonathan Silver in 1997, right up to today.
