Santander Bank, N.A. announced that it renewed its commitment with Monmouth University for its Santander Universities Global Division to support the Urban Coast Institute (UCI) Marine Science & Policy Initiative.
Through the UCI Marine Science & Policy Initiative, students gain practical experience studying the ocean, its ecosystems and coastal environments. As stewards of the sea, they provide the region, state and nation with research and policies that impact critical sustainability issues on a global platform. From coastal storm readiness and community resilience, to coastal and estuarine water quality and restoration and ocean conservation and management, the UCI Marine Science & Policy Initiative is preparing students to be leaders in the field of marine science worldwide.
“The UCI Marine Science & Policy Initiative is giving students hands-on experience that will set them apart from their peers when they pursue their careers in the field of marine science,” said Eduardo Garrido, director of Santander Universities US. “We are delighted that this agreement will help Monmouth University continue its research and policy work studying the ocean, its ecosystems and coastal environments.”
Santander and Monmouth University first signed an agreement in 2011 for the Bank’s Santander Universities Global Division to support the Entrepreneurship in Spain Program, Sin Frontera Chile Project and Project BAM, a collaborative mentorship program between Monmouth’s Institute for Global Understanding (IGU), Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth/Ocean County, and Asbury Park High School. The current agreement further establishes Santander’s interest in Monmouth University’s work in global sustainability and environmental and coastal issues.
“Santander is an excellent partner for Monmouth University,” said Dr. Paul R. Brown, president of Monmouth University. “Santander’s support for higher education, particularly for initiatives supporting scientific and technological progress, aligns perfectly with our commitment to expanding opportunities for immersive undergraduate educational experiences. We are honored to be selected as one of Santander’s global partners in higher education. This generous gift will support an initiative that has crucial regional, national, and even global implications.”
