Monmouth University Welcomes Best Class in its 90‑year History

Class of 2027 Tallies Highest GPA on Record of Any Incoming Class

Monmouth University’s Class of 2027 has earned the distinction of being the best academically prepared class in the University’s 90‑year history, boasting the highest grade point average (GPA) of any incoming first‑year cohort. The Class of 2027 also exceeded previous benchmarks of out‑of‑state and Honors School enrollments. The new class matriculates as Monmouth University continues to cement its national leadership in the integration of excellence and access, with nearly half of its incoming students identified as first generation and/or Pell Grant‑eligible.

“The Class of 2027—the finest in our history—has demonstrated a clear commitment to academic pursuit and intellectual curiosity, which bodes well both for their individual success and for the enrichment of our academic environment,” said Monmouth University President Patrick F. Leahy. “We are incredibly excited to welcome this cohort of high‑achieving students to campus.”

Monmouth’s incoming first‑year class was enrolled from over 9,000 applications, with students logging the highest average GPA (3.64) of any class. Additionally, a record‑setting 11.4 percent of incoming first‑year students are joining as members of the University’s Honors School, a community of high achieving, high ability, and highly motivated students.

Adding to its list of superlatives, the University recorded its highest‑ever enrollment from out‑of‑state students. Close to a third (30.4 percent) of the Class of 2027 enrolled at Monmouth from outside the state of New Jersey, coming from 23 U.S. states and 10 countries. The University also continues to attract strong numbers of underrepresented students with more than 29 percent of the first‑year class identifying as ethnically or racially diverse.

With the intersection of excellence and access at the heart of the University’s strategic plan, Monmouth also welcomes a record number of students to its thriving first‑generation and/or low‑income (FLI) community. Almost half (49.9 percent) of all students in the Class of 2027 are FLI students.

“Promoting and supporting social mobility as a central part of our pursuit of excellence in academics, as well as career outcomes, is one of the most important things we can do in higher education,” said Leahy. “We are committed to serving this greater societal purpose which can meaningfully change lives in the near‑term while also resetting the trajectory of families for generations to come.”
