Monmouth University is pleased to announce that social work student Meredith Fleece is a recipient of the New Jersey Heroes Heart of a Hero Scholarship. The $5,000 scholarship is given to ten military service members pursuing a post-secondary education or vocational training.
Meredith Fleece, a resident of Belmar, is a U.S. Air Force Senior Airman. She is currently pursuing a degree in social work at Monmouth University and hopes to work directly with military veterans in the future. She volunteers her time with many non-profit organizations in the community. After losing her brother to leukemia, Fleece was inspired to help cancer patients and their families and has been volunteering with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life each year. Following Superstorm Sandy, she helped families in need by working with Family Promise of Monmouth County.
New Jersey Heroes is an initiative of First Lady of New Jersey Mary Pat Christie, which showcases the positive and unique ways that people and organizations are impacting New Jersey and their communities. In partnership with Walmart, they offer the Heart of a Hero Scholarship to ten worthy recipients. Walmart donated $50,000 to fund the ten scholarships to be awarded this year.
