As a Fellow, President Emeritus Gaffney will support strategic development of UCI and support for UCI programs in the domain of coastal and ocean science and policy.
“We are extremely fortunate to have someone with President Emeritus Gaffney’s distinguished naval career and stature as an oceanographer, former Chief of Naval Research and member of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, among a long list of other accomplishments, to agree to serve as the first UCI Ocean Policy Fellow and continue as an active member of the Monmouth family,” noted President Brown.
Vice Admiral Gaffney also serves as a member of the Steering Committee of the Joint Ocean Commission, is an active Member of the National Academy of Engineering, and recently co-chaired the decadal review of the US Ocean Exploration program. Activities under this appointment will include but not be limited to
· provide strategic advice to the UCI Director, Tony MacDonald;
· support for planning coastal and ocean symposia, lectures and other campus events featuring national and international ocean leaders;
· representation of the University as a UCI Ocean Policy Fellow at national and international fora; and
· support for UCI in preparation of reports and studies addressing critical coastal and ocean issues.
The UCI was founded in 2005 as one of Monmouth University’s Centers of Distinction to advance the application of the best available science to support the implementation of good coastal and ocean management policy. See https://www.monmouth.edu/university/urban-coast-institute.aspx
The appointment and continued collaboration with President Emeritus Gaffney will further advance Monmouth University’s commitment to be a state and national leader on ocean policy and education, and expand opportunities for student research and community engagement that will improve understanding and stewardship of our coastal and marine environment.
