Julian Francis Abele (1881–1950) was a pioneering American architect and one of the most accomplished designers of his era. He was the first African American graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Architecture and went on to have a profound, though long under-recognized, impact on American architecture- including serving as the Chief Designer of our campus’ marquee building, the Great Hall at Shadow Lawn. Learn more about Julian Abele by visiting the Julian Abele Project.
