  • Pediatric Physical Assessment

    Fee: $95 (a light dinner is included in the program fee)
    This program will provide 5 contact hours for nurses.

    The course is designed to enhance the physical assessment skills of the healthcare provider who cares for the school age child. A step-by-step process for physical exam will be reviewed. Using images and a case study format, participants are guided to describe and identify physical findings. Clinical guidelines and standards of care are incorporated throughout.

    Desired Learning Outcomes: at completion of this program participants will apply the clinical knowledge gained in the assessment and care of the school age child.

    Topics will include:

    • An overview of normal and abnormal findings in health screenings
    • Common pediatric disease and disorders
    • The process & procedure for the assessment of the ear including demonstration of the otoscope
    • Vaccine preventable disease update

  • Sexual Assault Examination Across the Lifespan

    Fee: $875
    Please Note: Registration will close on June 1.

    Study materials will be provided for completion prior to the start of the course June 2. Post course assignments must be completed by July 10.
    Sixty-eight contact hours will be provided. (In addition to the classroom hours, approximately 44 hours of self-directed study including pre-course assignments, homework and post-course assignments will be required).

    This course reflects the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) standards for adolescent, adult, and pediatric SANE education and the requirements of the NJ Board of Nursing for Forensic Nurse Examiner Education. This program is designed for the RN with at least 2 years recent clinical experience, for MU Forensic Nursing Students, this course satisfies requirements for the SANE course in the certificate and MSN program.

    Desired Learning Outcome

    Registered nurses and advanced practice nurses will demonstrate knowledge and skill to provide competent, comprehensive, patient-centered, coordinated care to patients across the lifespan (geriatric, adult, adolescent, and pediatric) who are being evaluated for sexual assault, or suspected of having been sexually assaulted.

    Topics will include: forensic nursing and sexual violence, victim responses and crisis intervention, child sexual abuse, interdisciplinary collaboration, medical forensic history-taking, observing and assessing physical examination findings, medical forensic specimen collection, medical forensic photography, sexually transmitted disease testing and prophylaxis, pregnancy risk evaluation and care, medical forensic documentation, discharge and follow-up planning, clinical skill demonstrations, courtroom testimony and legal considerations.

    About Our Instructor

    Eileen Allen, MSN, RN, FN-CSA, SANE-A, SANE –P: Nationally certified sexual assault examiner & practicing forensic nurse, coordinator of the Monmouth County FNE/SART program. She has presented numerous lectures on a variety of topics related to Forensic Nursing for local, regional, and national audiences. Guest lectures will also be presented by experts from the scientific and legal community. Gynecological Teaching Associates (live models) are used to enhance clinical training experience.

  • Substitute School Nurse Workshop & An Introduction to School Nursing

    Fee: $95 – Light lunch is included.
    This program will provide 6 contact hours for nurses.

    About the Program

    This course is designed to provide a concise overview of the role and responsibilities of the substitute nurse in the school health setting. You may also consider taking this course if you are interested in learning more about school nursing.

    Learning Outcome is for the nurse who attends to apply the concepts learned to practice when caring for children as a substitute school nurse.

    The instructors will introduce and highlight content area in key topics:

    • Requirements for school and substitute school nursing / employment opportunities
    • Tips and techniques for the management of the school health office
    • Sample district policies & guidelines for documentation of care and services
    • Conducting physical assessment & health screenings
    • The management of common health concerns and communicable diseases
    • Handling emergency situations in the school setting.

  • Evidence-based Nonpharmacologic Strategies for Comprehensive Pain Care

    Fee: $75 / MU Faculty, Preceptors and Students $35

    This program will provide 3 contact hours for nurses or 3 clinical social work continuing education units. Licensed professional counseling accreditation recognizes either of these professional bodies and will accept these credit hours.

    Program Description

    This presentation will outline the societal impact of pain and the importance of pain as a major healthcare issue. The opioid crisis has intensified the need to explore integrative approaches to pain management. Yet, in spite of this growing concern, the evidence-base for nonpharmacologic pain care is not widely disseminated. This course will outline the role of evidence-based strategies as options in comprehensive pain care. The instructor will cover modalities shown to be effective and how they can be integrated for common pain conditions.

    Topics will include:

    • The impact of pain & the current status of pain management
    • The need for interdisciplinary and multimodal care
    • Process and success in changing policy for comprehensive pain care
    • An overview of effective evidence-based options for comprehensive pain management
    • Best practices and considerations for when referring to healthcare providers

    About Our Presenter

    Dr Arya Nielsen is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health. For over 40 years Dr. Nielsen has been a leader in integrating acupuncture practice to the Western conventional setting both in terms of safety, standards of practice, policy and procedures and presentation of the research evidence-base. She is the past Chair of the New York State Board for Acupuncture, and the Policy Working Group for the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health; the 75 North American member organization of academic medical centers and health systems that support utilization of evidence-based nonpharmacologic therapies as integrative medical care. Arya served on a 2014 Joint Commission Stakeholder Panel on pain that supported their clarification (2015) and mandate (2018) that nonpharmacologic therapies be provided in hospital settings.
