Sexual Assault Examination Across the Lifespan

Study materials will be provided for completion prior to the start of the course June 2. Post course assignments must be completed by July 10.
Sixty-eight contact hours will be provided. (In addition to the classroom hours, approximately 44 hours of self-directed study including pre-course assignments, homework and post-course assignments will be required).

This course reflects the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) standards for adolescent, adult, and pediatric SANE education and the requirements of the NJ Board of Nursing for Forensic Nurse Examiner Education. This program is designed for the RN with at least 2 years recent clinical experience, for MU Forensic Nursing Students, this course satisfies requirements for the SANE course in the certificate and MSN program.

Desired Learning Outcome

Registered nurses and advanced practice nurses will demonstrate knowledge and skill to provide competent, comprehensive, patient-centered, coordinated care to patients across the lifespan (geriatric, adult, adolescent, and pediatric) who are being evaluated for sexual assault, or suspected of having been sexually assaulted.

Topics will include: forensic nursing and sexual violence, victim responses and crisis intervention, child sexual abuse, interdisciplinary collaboration, medical forensic history-taking, observing and assessing physical examination findings, medical forensic specimen collection, medical forensic photography, sexually transmitted disease testing and prophylaxis, pregnancy risk evaluation and care, medical forensic documentation, discharge and follow-up planning, clinical skill demonstrations, courtroom testimony and legal considerations.

About Our Instructor

Eileen Allen, MSN, RN, FN-CSA, SANE-A, SANE –P: Nationally certified sexual assault examiner & practicing forensic nurse, coordinator of the Monmouth County FNE/SART program. She has presented numerous lectures on a variety of topics related to Forensic Nursing for local, regional, and national audiences. Guest lectures will also be presented by experts from the scientific and legal community. Gynecological Teaching Associates (live models) are used to enhance clinical training experience.
