Jonas Mekas Film and Art Exhibition
Jonas Mekas is the Founder of Anthology Films in New York, a filmmaker, poet, writer, and artist. Jonas Mekas captured moments that we all cherish in art history, in American history, in life… from filmmakers, Salvador Dali, Kennedy’s, Warhol, Yoko Ono and John Lennon, Elvis Presley, the World Trade Center… to the more personal special moments of nature, his family, being human and celebrating life, cherishing each experience to the fullest. Jonas Mekas was born in 1922 in Semeniskiai, Lithuania. In 1949 he emigrated to the U.S. together with his brother, settling in New York. He has been one of the leading figures of American avant-garde filmmaking playing various roles: His films have been screened extensively at festivals and museums around the world.
Daniel Johnston: I am a Baby in My Universe II
Welcome to the world, of Daniel Johnston.
Daniel Johnston, a singer-songwriter and visual artist whose childlike, haunted songs brought him acclaim as one of America’s most gifted outsiders. Throughout his life, Johnston suffered from mental illness, yet in the spirit of hope, this helped his work become even more profound in his continuing artistic journey throughout his lifetime. In a career filled with stops and starts, Mr. Johnston became something of a man-child celebrity of the artistic underground, earning the admiration of rock stars like Kurt Cobain and Tom Waits as well as comparisons to William Blake. Johnston became known by fellow musicians and the music press with songs, like “Speeding Motorcycle” and “Don’t Play Cards with Satan,” that had a poignant clarity yet showed glimpses of a fractured mind. Well-known for his strange, cartoonish art that decorated his tapes and were featured in his visual art works, Johnston repeated various images often that were always etched in his mind. One, “Hi, How Are You,” featured a froglike alien; the image became his signature. Winning acclaim for both his music and visual art, his cartoon drawings were even included in the Whitney Biennial exhibition in 2006 at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Starting Over with John and Yoko: The Photographs
In August 1980, John Lennon and Yoko Ono made their triumphant return to the recording studio after a self-imposed five-year absence. Roger Farrington, an up-and-coming photographer from Boston, was hired to get “the shot” that would announce their comeback. It would be Lennon’s most intense press scrutiny since the heady days of the Beatles’ maiden voyage to America in 1964, and for Farrington, it would be the assignment of a lifetime. Just four months later, Lennon’s assassination would plunge the world into mourning. Farrington, whose new book Starting Over with John and Yoko: The Photographs, is co-authored by Monmouth University Professor Kenneth Womack, will display his legendary photographs at the Pollak Theatre beginning October 15th, offering audiences a rare, firsthand look at one of the most significant chapters in Lennon’s life and career.
Producing the Beatles

Based on his acclaimed podcast, Producing the Beatles, Jason Kruppa explores the music of the Fab Four from the perspective of the one person whose point of view has never been properly and thoroughly examined: their producer, George Martin. Using innovative techniques to break down their recordings, we’ll discover how the Beatles went from learning their way around the studio to becoming masters of the art of recording, with their producer working side by side with them each step of the way. And finally, with re-recordings and detailed recreations of Martin’s orchestral scores that allow us to hear individual instrument parts,, we’ll learn how his arrangements enhanced and shaped the Beatles’ music.
