Verdi’s thrilling take on the immortal Shakespearean drama centers on the doomed Scottish king, haunted by the ghosts of his murderous ascent to the throne, and his power-mad wife, whose
ruinous ambition damns them both. Two of opera’s most extraordinary artists, baritone Quinn Kelsey (Tosca, Rigoletto) and Lise Davidsen (Tristan und Isolde, Fidelio, Tosca, Der Rosenkavalier, Ariadne auf Naxos) star as the scheming couple determined to seize power at any cost in a highly anticipated new production.
Overflowing with gorgeous melody, Mozart’s witty romantic comedy follows two sailors who switch places to test their fiancées’ faithfulness, with hilarious results. Hailed as “colorful, inventive” by The New York Times, PhelimMcDermott’s (Satyagraha, Akhnaten, The Hours, The Enchanted island) production updates the setting to an amusement park inspired by Coney Island in the 1950s, featuring sword swallowers,
fire breathers, contortionists, and more.
As part of the ArtNOW Visiting Artist Series, Marvin Heiferman will speak about grief, photography and image sharing. After the March 2020 COVID-related death of his husband – the noted cultural critic and curator Maurice Berger – and when grief struck and as words failed him, Heiferman suspected photography wouldn’t. Since then, daily postings of images and their accompanying captions on his Instagram account have functioned as intimate, frontline reports on the experience and processing of grief. Widely viewed and written about, his online project has engaged thousands in a communal dialog and is now the subject of an upcoming documentary film short.
ArtNOW events are free and open to the public.
