This versatile singer-songwriter has moved audiences of all kinds with her big-hearted, hold-nothing-back approach to rock, blues, R&B, country, folk, spirituals and funk. The New York Times described her blend as “…a love of mixing things up… vocal style ranges from a dirty blues moan to a gospel shout to an ethereal croon.” Leading her renowned band–BIGLovely, launched in 1996–she instantly connects, inspires and empowers. Reagon has collaborated with top innovators in music field including Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Costello, Ani DiFranco, Pete Seeger, Dar Williams, Lizz Wright, Me’shell Ndegéocello and Marc Anthony Thompson (aka Chocolate Genius). Aging in America: Portraits and Commentary, is an exhibition of portraits by Janet Boltax comprised of individuals who are 90 plus years old, along with excerpts of interviews with them. The interviews focus on interesting facets of their lives and how they are adapting to the process of aging. Opening Reception: April 15, 6-8 pm
Aphra Behn shares her experiences as a feminist activist and artist for almost 20 years as a member of Guerrilla Girls (1997-2001) and Guerrilla Girl On Tour! (2001 – present). Revealing the inside workings of the grassroots groups, she discusses the successes (protests; fax blitzes; speak-outs and street theatre); the struggles (hate mail; death threats; backlash) and the downright defeats (sabotage; infighting). Act Like a Feminist Artist is a 60 to 90 minute interactive talk, audience members will be challenged to rethink the concepts of what it means to be an “activist,” “artist,” and “feminist.” The talk is framed with readings from Aphra’s upcoming memoir, “UN/MASKED, My Secret Identity Revealed” (Skyhorse Publications, October 2016.) A lively Q and A will follow the talk.
