The Northern District of California is one of the largest U.S. Attorney’s Offices in the country with 103 attorneys located in the three-staffed offices: San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. The Office prosecutes federal crimes, defends, and pursues the interest of the United States in civil cases. The office is responsible for representing the federal government in virtually all litigation involving violations of federal law, civil lawsuits against the government, and actions to collect judgments and restitution of behalf of victims and taxpayers.

The district stretches from the Monterey Coast to California’s northern border with Oregon, and from the Pacific Ocean nearly to Sacramento in the East. Nearly 9 million people live, work, and raise their families in the Northern District of California. The District’s main office is in San Francisco with branch offices in Oakland and San Jose, CA.

If selected, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing a range of legal and administrative support services to attorneys in complex criminal matters. At the full performance level, duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • serving as a support specialist responsible for managing incoming and outgoing discovery in complex criminal matters, to include coordinating with agency partners to collect materials, reviewing incoming materials to assess responsiveness, organizing complex and voluminous materials for efficient review by the case team, preparing materials for production, and maintaining detailed indices of materials received and produced;
  • analyzing and summarizing evidentiary materials, including witness statements and documentary records, drawing upon knowledge of the legal and factual issues in the Government’s case;
  • assisting attorneys with hearing and trial preparation, and during live court proceedings, to include maintaining witness lists and schedules, drafting subpoenas, assembling and managing exhibits, and operating trial presentation software in the courtroom;
  • conducting complex legal and factual research in legal and non-legal databases in support of criminal cases, and drafting a variety of legal documents such as discovery requests and routine motions, proposed orders, and notices.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Each grade has 10 step rates and new Federal employees are usually hired at step one of the applicable GS grade level at which the applicant qualified. The salary range for a GS-7 in San Francisco, California is $63,081- $82,007 (step 1 through step 10). The salary range for a GS-9 in San Francisco, California is $77,161- $100,315 (step 1 through step 10).
