This internship will support the Executive Director of the East Lansing Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and will provide experience to an individual in the areas of board coordination, community development, placemaking, urban and regional planning, and economic development. Responsibilities range from community engagement activities, data collection, presentation preparation, grant management, business development support, and infrastructure planning.  

Job duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Engage with community members, visitors, and businesses within downtown East Lansing.
  • Execute research and data collection activities.
  • Assist with implementation of a facade improvement grant program.
  • Assist with planning for repairs to downtown infrastructure and amenities.
  • Prepare presentation materials for public meetings.
  • Assist with business attraction and retention efforts.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or advanced degree in urban & regional planning or a related discipline
  • Must have strong problem-solving skills, comfort speaking with members of the public, and a willingness to learn and work as part of a team

To perform the essential functions of the job, an individual may be required to stand for prolonged periods of time as well as travel between sites within the City, work in both indoor and outdoor environments, operate assigned office equipment including computers, and communicate effectively with both City employees and the public.
