Position Summary

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides skilled occupational therapy treatments under the direction of a licensed Occupational Therapist. This role supports patients in achieving their highest level of functional independence and quality of life through individualized treatment interventions and patient-centered care.

The COTA also participates in departmental initiatives, quality improvement activities, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional development while serving as a resource to staff, rehabilitation teams, and therapy students.

Essential Responsibilities

Patient Care & Treatment

  • Implement occupational therapy treatment plans established by the supervising Occupational Therapist.
  • Deliver individualized therapy interventions designed to improve strength, mobility, function, self-care skills, and independence.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on therapeutic exercises, adaptive equipment, home programs, and safety techniques.
  • Utilize treatment modalities and rehabilitation equipment to maximize patient outcomes.
  • Collaborate with physicians, therapists, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate patient care.
  • Maintain professional and compassionate communication with patients and families.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Complete timely and accurate documentation of treatments and patient progress.
  • Ensure documentation supports billing, reimbursement, and regulatory requirements.
  • Adhere to departmental policies regarding treatment notes, discharge summaries, and outcomes reporting.
  • Maintain compliance with state licensure requirements and organizational standards.

Department & Team Collaboration

  • Manage assigned caseload while meeting productivity expectations.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and initiative in supporting team and department needs.
  • Participate in team meetings, performance improvement projects, and program development activities.
  • Assist with mentoring students, interns, and support personnel as appropriate.
  • Promote a collaborative and patient-focused culture across rehabilitation services.

Professional Development

  • Maintain clinical competency through continuing education and evidence-based practice.
  • Share education and best practices with colleagues through in-services and training.
  • Stay current with emerging rehabilitation techniques and occupational therapy best practices.
  • Serve as a resource for rehabilitation staff and the broader healthcare team.

Qualifications

Required Education & Licensure

  • Associate Degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  • Current Indiana Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) License in good standing.
  • Current BLS/CPR Certification or ability to obtain within established timeframe.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in outpatient, acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, or healthcare settings preferred.
  • Strong clinical judgment and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and assist patients throughout the day.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds independently and greater amounts with assistance.
  • Ability to push wheelchairs and therapy equipment and perform CPR when required.
  • Exposure to healthcare environments and potential infectious diseases.
