Fraternity and Sorority Life

Spring 2024

Fraternity and Sorority Life is excited to welcome our students back to campus for what we anticipate will be a semester filled with opportunity and community enhancement. Our 15 recognized chapters represent approximately 600 students and they come from all walks of life and inhabit a large part of the extra-curricular experience at Monmouth University. Many of the chapters will carry on the tradition of growth through the fall recruitment process where we have already seen great interest among our unaffiliated students.

PLEASE NOTE: It is also important to remember that Monmouth University operates on a deferred rush process which means students must first complete at least 12 credits and have an overall GPA of 2.5 or better before they are eligible to actively pursue joining one of our 15 recognized chapters. To that point, first semester, first-year students are not eligible to join one of our fraternities or sororities until they meet the above noted academic requirements.

There is important information for parents and family members regarding eligibility and recognized organizations in the Parent and Family Guide. Students and family members are encouraged to contact Fraternity and Sorority Life should they have any questions.

Recognized vs Non-Recognized Groups

It is important for students and families to understand the differences between university “Recognized” and “Unrecognized” fraternities and sororities:

A “Recognized” fraternity or sorority is one that is in good standing with Monmouth University. Recognized fraternities and sororities are also acknowledged by one of the three fraternity and sorority governing councils – the Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, or the Multicultural Greek Council. Recognized fraternities and sororities receive many privileges from the University including the ability to host/sponsor events on campus, utilize University facilities, and receive legal support from their national headquarters, and many others.

An “Unrecognized” fraternity or sorority is not associated with Monmouth University. These organizations and their members do not receive any support or advisement from the University. Unrecognized fraternities and sororities may not participate in any University-sponsored activity and may not utilize any property owned, operated, leased or managed by Monmouth University. In some cases, the University may have severed its relationship with these organizations due to significant and serious concerns over the health and safety of our students and University community or the organization did not follow the proper procedure to become a recognized organization on campus but chooses to continue to operate as an organization without the recognition of the University. In either case, the University would strongly discourage maintaining or seeking membership in these organizations.

Recognition of the following organizations at Monmouth University has been withdrawn by their respective Inter/National Headquarters:

Delta Tau Delta (fraternity)

Tau Kappa Epsilon (fraternity)

Theta Xi (fraternity)

Alpha Kappa Psi (co-ed fraternity)

Zeta Tau Alpha (sorority)

The University supports these actions and no longer recognizes Delta Tau Delta, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Theta Xi, Alpha Kappa Psi and Zeta Tau Alpha fraternities as part of the fraternity and sorority community.  Anyone continuing to recruit new members for any of these groups would be violating the Student Code of Conduct and the Inter/National Headquarters’ policies.

(Delta Tau Delta, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Theta Xi are men’s organizations. Alpha Kappa Psi is a co-educational professional business fraternity. Zeta Tau Alpha is a women’s organization).
