Guatemala Public Health will introduce students to the concepts and practice of public health in a developing country. Students will expand their understanding of health issues that exist in Guatemala and they will deliver a health education lesson to "Las Amigas", a group of women who are being trained to be community health care workers. The group will spend four days providing health education, one day helping on a construction project at the main Salud Y Paz medical building, one day in Chichicastenango and another in Antigua.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- Evaluate cultural, political, economic and ethical influences on health of those living in Guatemala.
- Analyze contemporary health issues in developing nations.
- Describe strategies to improve health in a cross-cultural context.
- Deliver a health education lesson to a group of community health care workers.
