Guatemala Public Health will introduce students to the concepts and practice of public health in a developing country. Students will expand their understanding of health issues that exist in Guatemala and they will deliver a health education lesson to "Las Amigas", a group of women who are being trained to be community health care workers. The group will spend four days providing health education, one day helping on a construction project at the main Salud Y Paz medical building, one day in Chichicastenango and another in Antigua.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Evaluate cultural, political, economic and ethical influences on health of those living in Guatemala.
Analyze contemporary health issues in developing nations.
Describe strategies to improve health in a cross-cultural context.
Deliver a health education lesson to a group of community health care workers.

Destination		Guatemala (Chichicastenango, Antigua, highlands, and more).

Cost		$1,500 +/- Total $620 American Airlines + $875 Group price includes: Professional health education experience with Las Amigas Interpreter for three days with Las Amigas Hotel at Santo Tomas in Chichicastenango (Saturday & Sunday) Hotel in Panajachel (Thursday) Hotel in Antigua (Friday & Saturday) Lodging at a hostel or camp (very basic/camp-like lodging; M, T, W) All meals except those listed below Construction donation of $50 (fee for the group is $2,000; without $ for supplies there would be no construction). All transportation within country All tips (bus drivers in U.S. and Guatemala) Shuttle to Newark airport from campus and return T-shirt with participant names Note: The professor will pay the same price as students.
