Study Abroad
Spring 2010
Monmouth University strongly encourages study abroad for qualified students who want to earn credits toward their degree while experiencing the benefits of travel and immersion in other cultures. Participating in Monmouth University's Study Abroad program fulfills the Experiential Education requirement necessary for graduation. All of your courses will be accepted and can be used to fulfill major/minor, general education, and elective requirements. Most importantly, the Study Abroad Office is available to help you every step of the way.
WHY STUDY ABROAD?
If you are contemplating study abroad, you are demonstrating a desirable trait that sets you apart from other students: intellectual curiosity. The choice to spend time living and learning in a foreign locale may be one of the most enriching and life-changing experiences you will have. Your desire to expand your cultural horizons and experience life from an entirely new perspective is nothing less than exhilarating. Nearly 100 percent of participating students said that study abroad was the single best decision they made during their college years and nearly all report they would do it again. There is no textbook or classroom that can substitute for actually living in another country and experiencing how other people live, work, think, and play.

MONMOUTH MAKES IT EASY
- While participating in one of Monmouth University's semester or summer study abroad programs you will be living and learning with other Monmouth University students, as well as with college students from other American schools and from other countries.
- All courses taken abroad will be pre-approved before you leave.
- All earned grades from the foreign institution will be posted to your Monmouth University transcript, but will not be calculated in the Monmouth University cumulative GPA.
- The tuition, fees, room, and board prices are the same as those for on-campus students. All financial aid, including your Monmouth academic grant or scholarship, can be applied toward the costs of a semester abroad when you participate in a Monmouth-sponsored program in England or Australia or Italy (fall). The only exception is athletic scholarships and tuition remission. The ability to apply financial aid makes study abroad affordable. For most students, the cost of study abroad, with the exception of airfare and personal expenses, can be the same as a semester on campus. You can often borrow additional funds to assist with the purchase of plane tickets and living expenses.
- We offer a comprehensive Student/Parent Pre-departure Orientation, Bon Voyage Party, and several meetings with former study abroad students to answer your questions and concerns.
- We will welcome you back with a reunion luncheon.
- We offer you many 'extras', such as airport pick-ups, welcome/farewell dinners, weekend and/or day-trips (depending on the program) and much, much more.
- Monmouth does not forget you while you are away. The study abroad office will communicate with you and keep you updated with on-campus happenings by sending you The Outlook (student-run newspaper) each week along with other surprises. This office is also available to help you or your family with any questions or concerns that may arise at any time during the semester.
- Monmouth makes a very strong effort to provide students with on-campus housing upon their return from study abroad.
Fall Study Abroad Students must notify the Office of Residential Life by December 1 of their need for housing for the spring semester. Residential Life wil process all requests over the winter break and place these students in any available University owned or University sponsored housing. Historically, all students abroad during fall who request housing for the following spring are accomodated.Spring Study Abroad Students must participate in the housing lottery. The Office of Residential Life will act as a proxy for those students while they are abroad during the spring semester, allowing them to participate in the lottery process. Complete details about the lottery process may be viewed online.
- The study abroad office is your conduit to the Monmouth campus while you are abroad. We maintain strong links with our overseas partners to ensure your safety, welfare, and quality education.
