50 Hour Pre-Service Program

Monmouth University / Now Offered Completely Online

COST: $500
You do not need to HOLD a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) to enroll in this course.

This course satisfies the New Jersey Department of Education requirement for those wishing to pursue certification through the Alternate Route process. This is a requirement to work in any New Jersey public or private school district. Teacher candidates will have the opportunity to take part in an online approach including hosted virtual sessions with an Adjunct Professor who is also an administrator in a local school district, to learn the basics needed to start the journey to becoming a teacher. We will use Zoom for our virtual meetings. A teacher candidate may need a computer or a phone with a camera to access.

The requirements for this class is that one possesses a college degree and meets the state GPA requirements. For someone who has graduated prior to September 1, 2016, this requirement is 2.75 or above; for anyone who graduated after September 1, 2016, the requirement is 3.0 or higher.

Topics that will be covered during the virtual learning sessions of this class include:

  • Classroom differentiation/ current strategies
  • Language and acronyms used in education
  • Lesson Planning Preparation
  • NJ Professional Teaching Standards
  • Special Education
  • Social-Emotional Learning
  • Teaching job support as an Alternate Route Candidate

For clinical observation hours teacher candidates will be provided with a video simulation of lessons that they will critique and identify specific strategies. The final component will be the teacher candidates presenting a recorded lesson plan to their instructor and peers. Monmouth University is fully confident in our ability to provide you clinical observation hours through video simulation.

*  If you took the 24-hour class prior to 2017, you would need to take the entire 50 hours. We do not offer a “bridge” option. This is due to the new requirements of the course including preparing and delivering lessons when the State changed the requirement to the 50 Hour model in 2017. We have 50 Hour courses scheduled bi-monthly. Please see our available schedule.

CTE or P-3 Endorsement seekers ARE only ELIGIBLE for this course. Please consult the NJ PTP website to help you determine your program options beyond the 50.
