Office of the General Counsel

The General Counsel is the University’s attorney. The Office of the General Counsel is responsible for protecting the University’s legal interests and managing the University’s legal affairs. The office provides legal advice and coordinates legal representation for the University as a whole. Also located within the Office of the General Counsel are the Office of Equity and Diversity and the Office of Internal Audit.

As a service-oriented office, the Office of the General Counsel provides legal information and support to the Board of Trustees, the President, administrators, and faculty and staff. As the University’s in-house attorney, the General Counsel’s main focus is on matters that could have legal implications for the University’s policies and procedures, contractual obligations, insurance, operations, and governance. All university contracts/agreements must be reviewed and approved by the Office of the General Counsel prior to being signed by your area vice president or their designee.  To have a contract reviewed, please email all contracts/agreements to gccontractsubmission@monmouth.edu.

The philosophy of the Office of the General Counsel is the proactive practice of law. In accordance with that philosophy, the General Counsel strongly encourages members of the University community to consult with the office before issues arise or as soon as possible thereafter. This approach best enables the office to protect the interests of the University and its members.
