  • Evil Does Not Exist

    This is the Institute for Global Understanding (IGU) and the Center for the Arts at Monmouth University’s first Pearson’s World Cinema Series (PWCS) movie and discussion event of the fall semester on Thursday, September 25th, at 6:05PM in the Great Hall Auditorium. We will screen the movie Evil Does Not Exist (2023), directed by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, followed by a post-screening Q&A session hosted by Dean Dave Golland and with Prof. Chris DeRosa as discussant. A post-screening discussions and refreshments will follow.

    Class Schedule: September 25, 30, and October 7 | 7:30 – 9:00 PM
    Introduction to Creative Writing: Character Development: Whether you are embarking on your memoir or crafting your first work of fiction, the task of the writer is to develop compelling characters that connect with readers. Taking the “me out of memoir” allows you to develop your parents and loved ones as characters. In this three part course, we will utilize description, dialogue, and action to create characters that resonate with readers of any genre. No experience necessary, just a willingness to create characters to jump off the page!

With new advances in technology, the way we consume music through our devices, apps and on demand streaming services like Pandora, Spotify and iTunes is making the idea of the “album” as an art form extinct. Get together with other music enthusiasts on Tuesday nights to discuss some of the greatest records of all-time! Listen to the album beforehand and then come prepared to discuss. This event will feature Buckingham Nicks.

    Monmouth University, Department of Art & Design, in collaboration with Parlor Gallery in Asbury Park is pleased to present Double Trouble, a groundbreaking exhibition uniting the strong works of Dennis McNett (Wolfbat) and Ben Venom. McNett’s large-scale wood carvings and intricate prints stand in powerful dialogue with Venom’s punk-infused quilts and textile works. These boundary-pushing artists transform traditional techniques into bold cultural statements that challenge, provoke, and inspire.

    Georgia O’Keeffe: the Brightness of Light and Q&A with the Filmmakers

    Georgia O’Keeffe: the Brightness of Light is a 2-hour documentary exploring the life and art of the most important woman artist of the 20th century – the ”Mother of Modernism.” In the 1920s, O’Keeffe became famous for her paintings of flowers, bones, and the beauty of nature. She posed nude for shocking photographs by Alfred Stieglitz, but denied that her paintings depicted sexual imagery. In the 1970s, she emerged as an iconic role model for women.

    Following the screening, Producer Ellen Casey Warner and Director Paul Wagner will host a discussion to share insights into the making of the documentary and answer audience questions.

You’ll learn to draw with both technical skill and confidence—in just one session. With a single feather as your subject, you’ll learn to slow down and really see—translating its shape and texture into a drawing through focused observation. Each drawing will reflect the individual behind it—created entirely by your own hand, and completed with real technical skill, even if it’s your very first time.
