Career Preparation

Psychology prepares students for careers that are vast and diverse. At Monmouth, we offer multiple opportunities for students to explore potential careers and to develop professionally. As a result, our graduates are ready to embrace the transition from student to professional.

Career Preparation in Psychology (PY 202)

This one-credit course introduces various career opportunities available to students with an undergraduate degree in psychology. It also helps students build the necessary skills for seeking employment and gaining acceptance to graduate school (i.e., writing resumes and cover letters, interviewing, graduate school and job searches, writing personal statements for graduate school, etc.)

Career Modules

We integrate professional development and career advising throughout major required courses, starting at the sophomore level and continuing through the senior year. The modules focus on career exploration and planning, allowing students to better plan their academic opportunities and prepare for their future.

Upper-level Coursework

The psychology major allows students to select from an array of upper-level electives that meet their own career goals, such as School Psychology, Intro to Clinical Psychology, Animal Training, and Industrial & Organizational Psychology.


We encourage students to have multiple internships. Students may pursue their applied experiences independently with a faculty member or in our Field Experience (PY 310) class. This course combines class meetings and a supervised internship from over 150 sites representing the diverse range of psychology careers.

Alumni Professional Mentoring Program

We pair current psychology students with successful psychology alumni who are currently in fields, such as school psychology, addictions counseling, human resources, pharmaceutical clinical trials, marketing, psychiatry, and marriage and family therapy. Current undergraduate students network with alumni via email, telephone conference calls, in-person meetings, and/or visits to their places of work in order to obtain first-hand real world insights into potential career paths.

Academic Advisors/Mentors

At the start of the sophomore year, we assign each student a faculty advisor in the department. Students generally stay with the same advisor until graduation in order to build a lasting relationship. Along with advice on academic issues, advisors mentor students to help with career planning, professional development, and preparing for “Life after Monmouth.”
