About the Program
The Boston Housing Authority’s (BHA) youth programs serve youth ages 6–18 living in public housing. The programs combine fun, enrichment, and real-world skill building through field trips, workshops, projects, and community-based experiences. Our goal is to create a safe, engaging afterschool program where young people build confidence, explore interests, and develop skills they can carry into school, work, and life.
Position Overview
Youth Programs Intern is a part-time, paid position that supports the day-to-day implementation of BHA’s afterschool programming. Interns work directly with youth and under the supervision of the Youth Center Coordinator, while also collaborating with other members of the Youth Programs team.
This role is hands-on and relationship-based. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with younger children and teens, can show up consistently, and is comfortable being both a mentor and a facilitator in a fast-paced summer environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support Youth Center Coordinator with the daily operations of the afterschool program
- Help plan and facilitate a mix of activities including:
- Homework help and tutoring
- Recreation and games
- Social-emotional and mental health workshops
- Financial literacy and workforce readiness sessions
- Cooking, nutrition, and life skills activities
- Project-based learning (community projects, creative work, events, or small business ideas)
- Assist with supervision of youth to ensure a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment
- Build positive relationships with youth and serve as a consistent, supportive presence
- Help lead icebreakers, group discussions, and team-building activities
- Support logistics such as attendance, set-up, clean-up, and transitions between activities
- Assist with special events, guest workshops, and community outings
- Model appropriate behavior and reinforce group agreements and program expectations
- Communicate concerns, observations, and successes with program staff
- Complete other duties as needed to support the program and youth center
Qualifications
- Interest in youth development, education, social services, community work, or a related field
- Experience working with youth (camp, afterschool, tutoring, mentoring, volunteering, etc.) preferred
- Comfortable working with youth from diverse backgrounds
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team
- Patient, flexible, and able to adapt to changing daily schedules
- Willingness to participate in physical activities, field trips, and hands-on programming
Requirements
- Must be available for the full duration of the afterschool program (October 2026-April 2027)
- Ability to pass required background checks
- Ability to stand, walk, and actively participate throughout the day
