Helen Keller Services for the Blind is thrilled to announce we will be expanding our Children’s Learning Center to two brand-new Long Island locations in Nassau and Suffolk County! These state-of-the-art facilities will serve preschool children who are blind or have low vision, as well as multiple disabilities, autism, Down syndrome, or pervasive developmental delays. This expansion reflects HKSB’s commitment to ensuring that Long Island families have access to the same high-quality early education and support services that have transformed lives in our Brooklyn Children Learning Center.
We currently have an exciting opening for a Teacher of the Visually Impaired – Related Services Clinician in our soon to open Suffolk and Nassau County Preschools! The TVI – Related Services Clinician will work in the CLC’s preschool program providing one-to-one and small group sessions with preschool children who have special needs and whose IEP mandates vision-related services. The role also involves creation and recording of daily session notes, quarterly/annual report writing, data tracking, and all other documentation related to the position.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Provide direct instruction to students in individual, small-group, and classroom settings through both pull-out and push-in service models.
- Collaborate with classroom staff and related service providers to develop and implement adaptations, accommodations, and instructional strategies to meet individual student needs.
- Adapt materials, learning environments, and instructional methods to support student access, participation, communication, and independence.
- Support the development of communication, visual efficiency, sensory, cognitive, social-emotional, and adaptive skills through individualized instruction and intervention.
- Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant documentation, including session notes, progress monitoring, assessment results, service records, quarterly reports, annual reviews, IEP-related documentation, and other required program records.
- Conduct and contribute to functional vision assessments, learning media assessments, and other vision-related evaluations, as appropriate.
- Interpret vision reports and incorporate vision-related recommendations into educational programming.
- Support implementation of IEP goals and monitor student progress through ongoing assessment and data collection.
- Provide consultation, training, and guidance to school staff and families regarding effective strategies for supporting students with visual impairments.
- Maintain timely and accurate documentation, service records, progress reports, and required program data.
- Participate in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings, parent conferences, and educational planning activities.
- Respect and support family participation in educational planning and decision-making.
- Maintain New York State certification requirements for Teachers of Students with Blindness and Visual Impairments (All Grades).
- Maintain a professional demeanor and contribute positively to the school community and work environment.
- Services will be provides across Suffolk and Nassau schools as needed.
Responsible for other duties as may be assigned or requested by his/her immediate supervisor and/or the Director of the Department.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
NYS Certification: Blind and Visually Impaired (All grades) required
Bachelor’s Degree from accredited program required, Master’s Degree preferred
Students with Disabilities (B-2 or all grades), in addition to Blind and Visually Impaired Teacher certification or extension preferred
Experience working with students in a 4410 preschool setting is preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee is required to safely lift, assist, and transport children, including lifting up to approximately 30 pounds, as required for daily care, positioning, and use of equipment.
