Under the direction of the City’s Principal Planner, the Planning & Zoning Intern will assist with research and implementation efforts for the recent comprehensive plan update, including an update to our future land use categories and map; current planning topics including community engagement methods, MEDC programs such as Redevelopment Ready Communities, & data centers; and more. Additional work opportunities, such as site plan or special use reviews, may also be available depending on the skills and interests of the selected candidate. This internship opportunity is funded by the East Lansing Planning and Zoning Division. Due to the nature of this position, individuals should be able to attend periodic evening events during the work week. Availability to work during weekend hours to support community events is preferred.

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or advanced degree in urban & regional planning or a related discipline
  • Will preferably possess a Michigan driver’s license and excellent driving record
  • Must have strong problem-solving skills, comfort speaking with members of the public, and a willingness to learn and work as part of a team
     

To perform the essential functions of the job, an individual may be required to stand for prolonged periods of time as well as travel between sites within the City, work in both indoor and outdoor environments, operate assigned office equipment including computers, City owned vehicles, and communicate effectively with both City employees and the public.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Variable; 20 hours/week September 8, 2026 – December 11, 2026, with potential for extension. Evening meetings periodically required.
