POSITION OVERVIEW: The Clerk’s Office is seeking multiple interns to provide clerical and administrative support across two departments at the Manhattan Courthouse: Docket Services & Miscellaneous Case Operations, Interpreters Office. The selected interns will be assigned to a particular department for the term of their internship based upon their skills, experience, and interest. The program is a directed and practical learning experience that offers hands-on experience in a professional setting, where interns will assist courthouse staff and contribute to a range of office functions and operations. The start and end dates of this internship are flexible; with an end date that is not to exceed December 31, 2026. This position is part-time with up to 20 hours/week.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: In this role, interns will have the opportunity to observe court proceedings and gain valuable insight into the workings of the federal court system. The intern will perform various administrative duties, including filing, copying, answering the phone, taking messages, scanning, retrieving and boxing documents, labeling records, and creating spreadsheets. Each intern will report directly to the directors of their respective departments.
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: This internship requires excellent communication skills (written and oral), strong interpersonal skills, computer literacy, basic math, and some knowledge of legal terminology. The incumbent must be punctual and reliable.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have obtained a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent. Preference will be given to applicants who are enrolled in an approved university and have a major or minor in criminal justice, law or the legal system, foreign language, interpretation and translation, or any closely related field of study. Interns who have an interest in the state/local or federal courts or government will also be given preference.
