  • The Wayne D. McMurray School of Humanities and Social Sciences Distinguished Speaker Series

    In 2004, the first public exhumation of a mass grave in Andalucía, Spain took place in the province of Cádiz, bringing to light the buried history of repression under the Franco dictatorship. Professor Cate-Arries’ lecture focuses on the oral testimonies she has recorded with family members of the civilian victims who were “disappeared” by the regime in 1936. She examines how private mourning practices, personal objects of memory, and stories once told behind closed doors preserved a collective memory of the losers of a civil war who decades ago fought for the democratic ideals embraced by today’s Spain.

    Following a sell-out run at London’s Royal Court Theatre, Olivier and Academy Award® winner Martin McDonagh (The Pillowman, The Cripple of Inishmaan, In Bruges) returns to the West End with Matthew Dunster’s award-winning production of his deeply funny new play Hangmen, broadcast live to cinemas by National Theatre Live.

    In his small pub in the northern English town of Oldham, Harry (David Morrissey – The Walking Dead, State of Play) is something of a local celebrity. But what’s the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they’ve abolished hanging?  

    Amongst the cub reporters and pub regulars dying to hear Harry’s reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd (Andy Nyman – Peaky Blinders, Death at a Funeral) and the peculiar Mooney (Johnny Flynn – Clouds of Sils Maria) lurk with very different motives for their visit.

    The Jewish Cultural Studies Program at Monmouth University presents a talk “The Fifth Beatle: The Untold Story of the Jew Who Made the Beatles” by Vivek J. Tiwary the #1 New York Times bestselling author, a Tony Award-winning Broadway producer, and the founder of multi-platform arts and entertainment company Tiwary Entertainment Group.

    Vivek’s graphic novel The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story, based on the untold life story of Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein, received worldwide critical acclaim and won a number of prestigious literary awards including the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best Reality-Based Work and two Harvey Awards including Best Original Graphic Novel.     On Broadway, Vivek’s productions have won a combined 25 Tony Awards over 44 Tony nominations—every single one of his shows has been decorated. They include such groundbreaking work as Green Day’s “American Idiot,” “A Raisin In The Sun,” and Mel Brooks’ “The Producers”. Vivek is currently working with Alanis Morissette and Pulitzer and Tony Award-winner Tom Kitt to adapt Morissette’s breakthrough album “Jagged Little Pill” for Broadway.
    Vivek also serves on the Board of Directors for Valiant Entertainment, a multi-platform company that boasts the third largest universe of comic book characters and has secured a 5-film deal with Sony Pictures.

    Prior to founding TEG and online music education/empowerment company StarPolish, Vivek held a number of major label music-industry positions and has worked with artists covering the entire musical spectrum from Bruce Springsteen to Britney Spears.

    Among many charitable pursuits, Vivek is the Co-Founder of Musicians On Call, a nonprofit organization that uses music and entertainment to complement the healing process.

  • Celebrated Author Erik Larson To Speak at Monmouth University

    Celebrated author Erik Larson will speak at Monmouth University on Monday, March 28, 2016, from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in Pollak Theatre. This event is free and open to the public.

    Erik Larson has written five books that have appeared on the New York Times‘ bestseller list, including such critically acclaimed works as In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin and The Devil in the White City. Mr. Larson’s most recent book is Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania, which deals with the implications of the sinking of the Lusitania by German torpedoes in May 1915 and will be the subject of his talk.

    This event is the inaugural lecture in the Department of History and Anthropology’s Charles Mayes World War I Lecture Series.

    Mr. Larson’s talk at Monmouth University will be his first public appearance since the release of Dead Wake in paperback. His books will be on sale before and after his talk, and Mr. Larson will be available to sign books after his talk.

  • Songwriters By The Sea

    Distinguished NJ Songwriters Joe Rapolla and Joe D’Urso are back this year hosting the celebrated Songwriters by the Sea series at the Lauren K. Woods Theatre. What once started in a small coffee shop as an area for local songwriters has
    now grown into a series that features some of the top songwriters in the country.

    This year, the show features a twist of rock music and country music. The rock music
    is courtesy of Eric Bazilian, founding member of the rock band Hooters. Bazilian is also known internationally for his efforts as a Grammy nominated songwriter, as well as being an arranger, multi-instrumentalist, and producer.

    Singing-songwriting duo Williams Honor will bring a bit of the country to Woods Theatre. The duo have exploded in Asbury Park’s music scene, and features producer and multi-instrumentalist Gordon Brown and performer powerhouse Reagan Richards. The two previously have worked and toured with many national acts before coming together to form the Jersey Shore’s first ever country duo. They’re about to release their first single to country radio “Send It To Me” from their debut album.

    Opening the show will be Monmouth University students Daniel Amato and Brittany Cannarozzi.

    The net proceeds will support Monmouth University’s Endowed Music Industry Scholarship.

    There will be a pre-show hospitality reception at 7 p.m. and post-show reception (included with ticket price)!

    Traditional Native American storytelling is deeply rooted in the earth – honoring all life, especially the plants and animals we depend on. Years upon years of a kinship with the land, life, water and sky has lead to intimate connections to the earth and a relationship of give and take with the natural world. Kevin Locke, visionary Hoop Dancer, preeminent player of the indigenous Northern Plains flute, storyteller, cultural ambassador, recording artist and educator leads an ensemble of multi-talented performers in an uplifting evening of storytelling interwoven with traditional Native American music and dramatic dance elements. Featuring music from Locke’s 2009 Nammy (Annual Native American Music Awards) award-winning album “Earth Gift” this world-premiere event will empower and energize us all to become stewards of our surroundings, preserving our world for posterity and encourage us to live together as part of the Universal heartbeat.

  • Andy Statman

    Presented by the Jewish Cultural Studies Program at Monmouth University.

    Had there been a planetarium in 19th-century Galicia, or a kosher deli in Depression-era Kentucky, Andy Statman’s music might have been playing in the background. Meandering through time, geography and
    culture in a few passionate, organic gusts of music, neither the man nor his inimitable hybrid sound has a very clearly defined “before” or “after.” Statman, one of his generation’s premier mandolinists and clarinetists, thinks of his compositions as “a spontaneous, American-roots form of very personal, prayerful Hasidic music, by way of avant-garde jazz.”

    This modest man takes for granted that a performer might embody several worlds in his art, and seems not to recognize that his music, like his story, is extraordinary. It’s a story Statman rewrites with his trio every time they perform: “We’re creating an experience between the audience and us.” Statman performs his distinctive, unconstrained meditations on jazz, klezmer, bluegrass and the human soul with bassist Jim Whitney and percussionist Larry Eagle. “At a certain point, we’re just talking, just having a threeway conversation.” This “conversation” changes each time they have it on stage, no melody sounding quite the same as it did before, and none bearing the definitive stamp of the genre that spawned it. A totally unselfconscious performer, Statman does not mind that many audiences leave slightly befuddled as to what kind
    of music, exactly, they have just heard.

  • Intro to Celtic Music Workshop with Switchback

    Attendees are presented with traditional pieces of Irish music, folklore and dance. Following the historic time-line of Irish emigration to the United States, participants are made aware of the evolution of Irish music, once immigrants reached America. They will  listen to the transformation of Irish music into today’s western, jazz and bluegrass. The resurgence of Irish music, dance and culture are also examined.

    Brian FitzGerald and Martin McCormack of Switchback have been playing their brand of eclectic Celtic and Americana music at sold-out concert halls, performing arts centers and festivals for over 20 years. Featuring a mix of Irish music and original songs, their concerts have been described as “breathtaking scenery for your ears.” With a mix of mandolin, guitar, and bass their harmonies have won comparisons to the Louvin Brothers, the Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel.
