If you are sent a letter/email by any member of the residential life staff or a hearing officer from the Division of Student Life, you should make sure that you remain calm.
If you have questions about the incident, check with the hearing officer and inquire about the process. Their phone numbers should be listed on the letter/email that you received.
Once an incident document or police report has been filed, you will most likely be contacted by a hearing officer. Provide that person with your utmost cooperation. You will be instructed to schedule an appointment. Make sure that you read all correspondence sent to you and pay close attention to dates and deadlines. When you schedule your appointment with the hearing officer, you should arrive on time and conduct yourself in a professional manner.
It is important to be upfront and honest with the hearing officer.
During your meeting with the hearing officer, you will have the opportunity to either request that a hearing panel review your case, or you may waive that process and ask that the hearing officer decide the case based on the information at hand or your willingness to accept responsibility for the incident. In either event, you do have the right to appeal the decision, as described in the Student Handbook.
