Position Title: Nonprofit Intern
Location: The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, New Haven, CT (administrative) Hybrid 
Duration: Fall 2026, 10-15 hours/week at $17 per hour 
Supervisors: HR Manager (primary), Chief Human Resources Officer (secondary)

Organization Description

Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides “a different kind of healing” to thousands of children with serious illnesses and their families annually – all completely free of charge. For many of these children and families, Hole in the Wall provides multiple Camp experiences throughout the year at the facility in Ashford, Conn, in dozens of hospitals and clinics, directly in camper homes and communities and through other outreach activities across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.           

General Functions
The Nonprofit Intern will support HITWGC’s mission of serving children with serious illnesses and their families through direct exposure and contribution to the many facets of a nonprofit organization. This internship offers an opportunity to gain broad, hands-on experience in the operations of a nonprofit organization. Based in our New Haven, CT office, the intern will explore multiple areas including marketing, development (fundraising,) finance, programming, human resources and more. The role is ideal for a motivated and curious individual who would like to understand how various departments work together to advance a mission-driven organization. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program
  • Interest in healthcare nonprofits, family support services, or mission-driven organizations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with sensitivity to medical privacy and family confidentiality
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute to a mission-driven team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Access to reliable transportation for travel between administrative offices (New Haven) and one travel day to program site in Ashford, CT

Essential Functions

This internship offers rotation through key departments, gaining experience in: 

  • Marketing – Exposure to communications and marketing
  • Human Resources – Help with recruitment outreach, onboarding tasks, data management and entry, and staff engagement
  • Finance – Learn budgeting basics, expense tracking, unrestricted versus restructured revue, and nonprofit financial processes
  • Development (Fundraising) –Learn about donor stewardship and major gift solicitation. Exposure to development operations, and corporate relations.
  • Programming – Visit the main camp site in Ashford, Connecticut and learn about the programs offered to children and families.

A student in this role will work alongside staff from multiple teams, building transferable skills, expanding their professional network, and gaining insight into how each department contributes to our mission. 

Note: This position requires successful completion of background checks, and child protection training provided by The Hole in the Wall, consistent with organizational standards for staff working with vulnerable populations.
