Who We Are

Disability Rights Florida (Disability Rights) is a not-for-profit corporation that acts as the state’s federally mandated Protection and Advocacy (P&A) System for individuals with disabilities. As Florida’s P&A System, Disability Rights’ mission is to advocate, education, investigate, and litigate to protect and advance the rights, dignity, equal opportunities, self-determination, and choices for all people with disabilities.

Purpose of the Job

The Communications and Digital Content Intern supports the organization’s digital outreach and audience engagement efforts by assisting with content production, social media scheduling, content planning, research, and communication workflow organization. 

Working with the Communications and Database Manager, this position supports communications work for Disability Rights Florida, Disability Deep Dive, and Access The Vote Florida, with primary emphasis placed on Disability Rights Florida. 

This role provides hands-on experience in accessible digital communications, nonprofit storytelling, and platform-specific content production.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

  • Assists with creating graphics, simple videos, and other digital assets in Canva based on approved copy and campaign priorities. 
  • Schedules approved social media posts using the agency’s content management tools and helps maintain posting calendars across platforms. 
  • Participates in monthly content planning by researching awareness dates, relevant trends, platform updates, and content opportunities that may strengthen audience engagement. 
  • Drafts first-pass alt text and image descriptions for social media graphics, videos, and other digital materials for staff review. 
  • Supports content development and social media growth for Disability Deep Dive, including assistance with separate Instagram and TikTok channels.
  • The Communications and Digital Content Intern works closely with the Communications and Database Manager and may collaborate with members of the Communications and Outreach Team and other staff as needed to support agency communications priorities. 
  • Currently enrolled student at a Florida college or university, preferably studying communications, marketing, digital media, journalism, public relations, or a related field, and able to work between 10 – 15 hours per week
  • Strong interest in disability rights, accessible communications, and digital audience engagement. 
  • Familiarity with major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, and related content trends. 
  • Experience with Canva or similar design tools and comfort creating 

    simple graphics and short-form video content. 

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to

manage multiple assignments and deadlines. 

  • Ability to communicate effectively and verbally with staff and

work collaboratively as part of a team. 

  • Ability to write clearly in plain language and assist with first-draft

alt text and image descriptions. 

  • Interest in tracking awareness dates, digital trends, and platform 

updates to support content planning. 

  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and common

web-based communication tools. 

  •  Work assignments will be prioritized by the Communications and 

 Database Manager in the following order:

Disability Deep Dive
