Energy Conservation

Monmouth has introduced many energy conservation initiatives over the past several years, priding ourselves as a leader among institutions of higher education. A number of measures have been and are being put into effect to conserve our natural resources and minimize our impact on the environment.

Programs and Partnerships

    Earth Week

  • Established both the Energy Resource Management Committee (ERMC) and the Sustainability Advisory Council, groups dedicated to promoting environmental awareness through education and outreach, and to proposing, researching, and recommending energy and sustainability policy for the university to implement.
  • Entered an ENERGY STAR Building and Plant Partnership. Incandescent bulbs have been replaced with equivalent compact fluorescent bulbs where applicable, and 65 classrooms have been fitted with light-controlling occupancy sensors.
  • Performed an energy audit of the major buildings on campus.
  • Making use of New Jersey Smart Start Buildings, a program designed to help renovate existing buildings to make them more energy efficient free of cost.
  • Held two lighting fairs offering energy-efficient bulbs and fixtures at deeply discounted prices to students and employees
  • Started field work for an energy audit on January 25, 2011, conducted under the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities Local Government Energy audit program. First draft of audit report completed
  • Purchase approximately 10% of our utility-supplied electricity from certified green sources.

Building Improvements

This year, the university began retrofitting three of its buildings with LED lighting: the OceanFirst Bank Center in May of 2016, and Bey Hall and Plangere Center in early FY2016-2017. The energy savings from these upgrades are outlined below:

The OceanFirst Bank Center

The OceanFirst Bank Center project has an expected energy saving reduction of approximately 55.22 percent. The university will see a payback period within 19 months.

Other undertaken measures include:

  • Reviewing academic buildings and residence halls for opportunities to install additional occupancy sensors. In addition to classroom and common areas, hallways and corridors are being considered along with restrooms.
  • Upgraded mechanical control/equipment in the Great Hall to use both Web and wireless access to control boilers, dampers, steam valves, and heat exchanger for control and potential energy savings.
  • Upgraded the burners in the Great Hall to dual fuel capability, enabling the university to heat the building by oil or gas. This allows us to negotiate an “interruptible rate,” which is lower than standard contract pricing.
  • Implemented lighting retrofit in Boylan Gymnasium.
  • Retrofitted all renovated residence halls with reflective cooled roofs. 

New Products and Upgrades

Community Garden

Nearly 22 percent of the university’s greenhouse gas emissions come from on-site sources—these include fuel for emergency generators, vehicle fleet fuel, and the combustion of natural gas and fuel oil for heating. From 2012 to 2015, the university reduced these emissions by 28 percent. This significant reduction is largely the result of two factors: converting boilers from dual fuel (fuel oil and natural gas) to natural gas only, and increasing the efficiency of the boilers and combustion equipment.

Other undertaken measures include:

  • Replaced all exit sign lighting with LED signs.
  • Installing Web-based platform on campus to allow for collection of sub-metered utility data for software analysis to identify potential energy savings campus-wide.
  • Installed high-speed hand dryers in locations throughout campus. The new hand dryers are 80% more efficient and are GreenSpec approved. The hand dryers promote hygiene and allow the university to decrease our waste stream of paper towels.
  • Replacing mechanical equipment with more energy-efficient devices as necessary.
  • Installed Web-based irrigation system at Larchwood Avenue entrance to adjust irrigations schedules based on need instead of time.
  • Installed light switch labels on campus urging the community to turn off the lights when leaving rooms.
  • Replaced our 2″ air filters with more efficient filters. Filters save utility costs and need to be changed less frequently, reducing labor costs as well.
  • Use 100% recycled paper products in all restrooms.
  • Use green cleaning products.
