Ziobro Presents “New Jersey’s ‘Dollar Princesses”’ March 31

Melissa Ziobro, specialist professor of public history, will present a virtual program that will explore the history of “Dollar Princesses” from New Jersey on March 31 at 7 p.m. The event, which is sponsored by  Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage Association is free but advanced registration is required.

Like “Downton Abbey’s” fictitious Cora Crawley, these New Jersey women of great wealth but less social standing married into the aristocratic families of Europe who despite their inherited nobility were losing their economic security at the turn of the twentieth century.

Ziobro has previously written about the “Dollar Princesses” in “‘The almighty dollar will buy you, you bet/ A superior class of coronet’: Biographical Sketches of N.J.’s Gilded Age ‘Dollar Princesses,’” published in vol. 4, issue 2 of “New Jersey Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal.”
