Monmouth University’s Marjorie K. Unterberg School of Nursing and Health Studies Center for Professional Development in Nursing and Health will present a program on Psychiatric Assessment in Primary Care on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, from 4 to 8:30 p.m., in Magill Commons, the Club Dining Room.
This program will provide four contact hours for nurses. The Center for Professional Development in Nursing and Health is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the New Jersey State Nurses Association, an accredited approver, by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s COA. Provider number: P242-4/09-12.
Primary healthcare practitioners are often the first to observe and identify mental health issues. There is growing evidence that integrating behavioral health treatment produces more favorable outcomes in managing chronic health problems. This class has been developed in response to numerous requests for continuing education on this topic and will provide the non-mental-health clinician an overview of psychiatric assessment techniques and screening tools.
Topics will include: Guidelines for performing a mental status exam; an overview of the diagnostic criteria for the most commonly seen mental health disorders; screening tools for depression and addictions; basic guidelines for treating depression, insomnia, and anxiety; and recommendations on when to refer to a mental health practitioner.
Presenter: Laura Kelly, Ph.D., RN, CNE–Assistant Professor, Marjorie K. Unterberg School of Nursing and Health Studies. Dr. Kelly has extensive experience in Adult and Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and has practiced in a variety of culturally diverse settings.
