  • Uber Whistleblower and Time “Silence Breaker” Susan Fowler to Speak at Monmouth University

The Leon Hess Business School Presents the 2018 H.R. Young Endowed Lecture:

“The Adventures of Susan Fowler at Uber: Sexual Harassment in Silicon Valley”

Uber whistleblower Susan Fowler will give the 2018 H.R. Young Endowed Lecture: “The Adventures of Susan Fowler at Uber: Sexual Harassment in Silicon Valley” on Wednesday, April 11, at 3 p.m. in Pollak Theatre on the Monmouth University campus.

Susan Fowler graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in physics. Following jobs at two startup companies, she was hired by Uber as a site reliability engineer. She resigned after one year and published a blogpost detailing the harassment and discrimination she had experienced as a result of rejecting her manager’s sexual advances. Uber CEO Travis Kalanick resigned and 20 employees were fired. Under Ariana Huffington’s supervision, Uber’s Board of Directors hired former attorney general Eric Holder and his law firm, which conducted an investigation and proposed sweeping changes.

In 2017, Fowler was recognized as the Financial Times Person of the Year and one of Time magazine’s persons of the year: “The Silence Breakers.” Her Uber adventures are the subject of an upcoming movie.

This free event is open to the public. RSVPs are not required for the lecture. Questions may be directed to Trish LaMarca at plamarca@monmouth.edu or 732-571-3423.

  • eDNA: A Forensic Approach to Fish Detection

Monmouth and Rockefeller universities are pioneering a marine life detection technique that holds the promise of being less expensive, more humane and more revealing than other longstanding scientific methods. Faculty and students from both institutions have been conducting research in water bodies along the New Jersey and New York coasts using environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling, an approach that allows scientists to confirm the presence of fish and other organisms by testing for trace amounts of genetic material that they shed into the water.

Join us for a free panel discussion that breaks down the science of eDNA and provides an update on what area waterways will be studied next. Pizza and refreshments will be served.

    PANELISTS

    • Jason Adolf, Monmouth University Endowed Professor of Marine Science
    • Jesse Ausubel, Director, Rockefeller University Program for the Human Environment
    • Keith Dunton, Monmouth University Assistant Professor, Department of Biology
    • Mark Stoeckle, Senior Research Associate, Rockefeller University Program for the Human Environment
