    #AnneFrank Parallel Stories is a powerful documentary retelling of Anne Frank’s life through the pages of her extraordinary diary guided by the Academy-Award winning actress Helen Mirren, and through the lives of five women who, as young girls, were also deported to concentration camps but survived the Holocaust.

    As a dedication to what would have been her 90th anniversary –and in cooperation with the Anne Frank Foundation — the documentary takes audiences into Anne’s room within the secret annex of her family’s hiding place before being deported, and through read excerpts of her diary intertwined with the experiences of the survivors who lived to tell their own parallel stories.

  • Just Beachy: A Reading of Sandy Stories

    Help us mark the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. Readers will present stories that have been posted to “9 Feet High,” part of the Just Beachy/After Sandy installation now on view in Rechnitz Hall’s DiMattio Gallery.

    We invite you to participate by reading your own story, or listen as you hear your own story being read. Join us as your Sandy experience is acknowledged through the spoken word. Your story deserves to be heard!

  • Star Wars Live Ballet

    Come see Monmouth’s 5678 Dance Club perform an original Star Wars Inspired Production. Ranging in different styles, this student produced production will be exciting to all that come and watch! 5678 Dance Club is the university’s low-stress high-fun dance club, where they produce and dance in several productions a year. All proceeds will go to supporting the student-run club, and create many more opportunities for students to create and perform! This performance will be held October 25th at 7:00 pm in Wilson Hall Auditorium. Tickets for MU Students will be $5 and $8 for the rest of the public.   • Tone, Featuring David Sancious and Ernest ‘Boom’ Carter, Former Members of Springsteen’s E Street Band, and Gerald Carboy

    The Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University will present An Evening with Tone, featuring David Sancious, Ernest “Boom” Carter, and Gerald Carboy, hosted by Bob Santelli, Founding Executive Director of the Grammy Museum, on Sunday, October 6, at 7 p.m. in the Pollak Theater on the university campus.

    The event is free and open to the public.

    In 1974 E Street Band keyboards player Sancious and drummer Carter left the group and teamed with Carboy, a Jersey Shore bass player, to form the jazz-fusion band Tone. Acclaimed by critics, Tone’s music expanded the parameters of fusion and featured the extraordinary keyboard work of Sancious. The group’s album, Transformation: The Speed of Love, is an acknowledged fusion classic.

    “Tone was one of the great jazz bands from the Jersey Shore,” said Santelli, author of Greetings from E Street: The Story of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. “Critics loved the band, but during the mid-1970’s hype surrounding the release of Born to Run, Tone didn’t get the attention it deserved from Springsteen fans.”

    Santelli will interview the musicians about Tone, their years in the Jersey Shore music scene, and the role Sancious and Carter played in the early days of the E Street Band. The night will conclude with a rare performance by the trio.

    Additionally, authors Barry Schneier and Chris Phillips will be on site to sign their book, Bruce Springsteen: Rock and Roll Future, published earlier this year. The book features Schneier’s photographs from the legendary performance of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the Harvard Square Theatre in 1974. It was that show that was reviewed by future manager Jon Landau, who wrote, “I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen.” The band line-up for that Boston show included Sancious and Carter.

  • BEYOND GROUND ZERO: 9/11 AND THE AMERICAN LANDSCAPE – Photographs by Jonathan C. Hyman

    On the afternoon of September 11, 2001, Jonathan C. Hyman, an artist and photographer based in upstate New York, embarked on a journey to document responses to the 9/11 terrorist attacks appearing in the landscape around him.

    Armed almost daily with his camera, ladder, and car, Hyman captured evidence of the grassroots expressions of everyday citizens spurred by this national catastrophe. His investigations took him from Maine to Florida and west to Illinois, though the majority of photographs were taken closer to New York City. The result is an expansive archive of more than 20,000 film and digital images. Hyman encountered improvised tributes and memorials on public and private property, in urban and rural areas, and on all manner of surfaces from building walls, handball courts, and vehicles to tree trunks, construction fencing, and human skin. He continued for years to document these unofficial memorials, many of which remained long after the emergence of more formal tributes.

    
Jonathan C. Hyman (American, b. 1960), is a fine artist and freelance photographer, living in Sullivan County, New York. A graduate of Rutgers University and Hunter College of the City University of New York’s MFA program, he documents vernacular art and contemporary American popular culture. Hyman is Associate Director for Conflict and Visual Culture Initiatives at Bryn Mawr College’s Solomon Asch Center for Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict.

    This exhibition is drawn from the collection of the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

  • Woodstock – Director’s Cut

    The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It’s more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese), director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director’s cut, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film’s release in 1970.

    The film deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, and it’s still a stunning achievement. Abundant footage taken among the massive crowd (“half a million strong”) expresses the human heart of the event, from skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses, to unpredictable weather, midconcert childbirth, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants. Then, of course, there is the music–a nonstop parade of rock & roll from the greatest performers of the period, including Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Canned Heat, The Who, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Ten Years After, Sly & The Family Stone, Santana, and many more. Watching this ambitious film, as the saying goes, is the next best thing to being there–it’s a time-travel journey to that once-in-a-lifetime event.

    Leonard J. Eisenberg tells the story of Jimi Hendrix through photos taken by him at three concerts in the 1960’s and recently published in his book “Photographing Jimi Hendrix.” In 1968 Leonard was three feet away from the guitar god at The Boston Garden allowing him an unprecedented point of view. His photos of Hendrix at Woodstock have been seen around the world and photos from The Carousel in Framingham, MA are renowned. Hear the stories of how these amazing images came to be.

    Singer-songwriter Colin Hay is most beloved for his intimate, confessional live shows but most widely known for being an influential and celebrated frontman of Men at Work, responsible for penning several pop hits of the early ’80s including (The Land) Down Under and Who Can it Be Now. After Men At Work, Hay embarked on a solo career, debuting in 1987 with Looking For Jack and continued to release critically acclaimed solo material throughout the 2000’s, Hay contributed I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You to the soundtrack of Garden State and has had roles in other cult movies and television shows.
