I spent the majority of my first 23 years living in Southern California where I attended the California State University at Fullerton, majoring in mathematics and minoring in philosophy. My calculus professor, Dr. Mario Martelli, took me under his wing and became an important mentor for many years. He took me to conferences, invited me to collaborate on a research problem, and ultimately convinced me that I can do mathematics. I have him to thank for my decision to pursue the life of a mathematician.

I left California to attend graduate school at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ where I met and married my wife Dr. Susan Marshall. I also earned my Ph.D. in mathematics there while working with Dr. William McCallum. I then spent two years working at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada which was a wonderful adventure. Susan and I then spent two years together working at The University of Texas at Austin before settling into New Jersey at Monmouth University in 2004. Along the way we added two amazing children to our list of accomplishments.

Mathematical Interests

My past mathematical research has been in the overlapping areas of algebra, number theory, and geometry. More specifically, my past work involved the study of algebraic number fields and algebraic curves. These days I am more interested in problems from these areas and others that allow me to educate and collaborate with undergraduate students. I’m also very interested in mathematical pedagogy and teaching, and have co-authored an innovative textbook and accompanying materials for an inquiry-based undergraduate number theory course.
