MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY HOSTS SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM SYMPOSIUM
Back to All News
Monmouth University’s School of Science Summer Research Program (SRP) has been under way for the past ten weeks. Now in its fourth year, the SRP enables students to work on collaborative research projects under the supervision of School of Science faculty and staff. Student researchers are carrying out exciting original research in a range of disciplines including biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, nanotechnology, software engineering, homeland defense and emergency preparedness, and watershed management.
Dr. Michael Palladino, Dean of the School of Science, stated: “The Summer Research Program provides students with invaluable research experience and helps to support an intellectual community of faculty teacher–scholars. Participating in a research experience as a student can be one of the most important factors that impacts future career choice. Research experience is also a key determining factor for acceptance into graduate and professional programs, and for employment in the sciences. We are thrilled to have these outstanding students on campus this summer to collaborate with our faculty on research. I encourage members of the campus community to join us for our end of summer Symposium to speak with our students about their work.”
Over 264 students from throughout the United States applied to the 2012 program which accepted 86 students including undergraduate and graduate students from Monmouth University, and students from area colleges and universities including Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, Mercer County Community College, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, and Sacred Heart University.
High school students from High Technology High School, Howell High School, and Marine Academy of Science and Technology are also involved in the program. Students have been working on research projects in wet laboratory, computer laboratory, and field research environments.
The SRP Symposium will be held on Thursday, August 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Erlanger Gardens on the Monmouth University campus followed by a beach-blast celebration event for students and faculty. At the symposium, students will be presenting their research in poster-format presentations. Members of the public are welcome to attend the symposium.
Corporate sponsors of the 2012 SRP include Bristol-Myers Squibb, Garden State Veterinary Specialists, Global Essence. Program supporters include School of Science faculty and staff, alumni and friends of the School.
